Welcome to my crochet octopus pattern. This is what the finished octopus applique will look like.

Crochet Octopus Pattern

Abbreviations

• st – stitch
• sts – stitches
• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• dc – double crochet
• htr – half treble crochet
• tr – treble crochet
• dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

• Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (105) Bridal White, (201) Electric Blue for the spots if desired and a tiny bit of (404) English Tea for the outer eyes or you could use the Bridal White.
• A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
• A darning needle to weave in ends.
• Scissors.
• Sewing thread and a needle to stitch the octopus together.
• Some black thread for the eye markings if desired.

Size

Large octopus (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

17cm wide x 17cm high or 6.5” wide x 6.5” high

Medium octopus (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

12cm wide x 12cm high or 4.75” wide x 4.75” high

Small octopus (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

8cm wide x 8cm high or 3” wide x 3” high

Head & Body

Using (105) Bridal White work 4 ch.

 

Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2^nd ch from hook, 2 tr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)

Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (9 sts)

Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 12: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 3 dc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 15: 1 ch, work 3 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 3 dc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 16: 1 ch, work 3 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 3 dc in last st. Turn. (16 sts)

Row 17: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (18 sts)

Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (18 sts)

Row 19: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, miss last st. (17 sts). Don’t fasten off.

1st Leg

16 ch.

 

Miss 1^st 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 2 ch, 2 htr in following ch, 1 tr in next st, 2 tr in following st, 1 tr in next st, a joined tr over next 3 sts, a joined tr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each ch to last ch, 2 dtr in the last ch. Join to the body with a sl st. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sl st in each st around the head and to start of 2^nd last row of the body where shown. Don’t fasten off.

2nd Leg

18 ch.

 

Work 1 htr in 3^rd ch from hook, 2 htr in following st, 1 htr in next st, 2 tr in each of following 3 sts, (1 tr in next st, 2 tr in following st) 2 times, 1 tr in each st to last 2 ch, a joined dtr over last 2 ch. Sl st in 1^st st along the bottom of the body.

3rd Leg

24 ch.

 

Miss 1^st 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, (a joined htr over next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 htr in following st, 1 tr in next st, (a joined tr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 tr in each st to last st, 2 dtr in last st. Miss 3 st along the body, sl st in next st.

4th Leg

25 ch.

 

Miss 1^st 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 5 ch, 2 tr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 7 sts, 1 dtr in each remaining ch, miss 3 sts along body, sl st in next st.

5th Leg

21 ch.

 

Work 1 htr in 3^rd ch from hook, (a joined htr over next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 htr in following st, a joined tr over next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of following 4 sts, 2 tr in next st, 1 dtr in each remaining ch, miss 2 sts along the body, sl st in next st.

6th Leg

Sl st in 1^st 2 sts of 5^th leg. 18 ch.

 

Miss 1^st 2 ch, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 2 htr in following st, 2 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of following 7 sts, 1 dtr in each remaining ch and 1 dtr and a joined dtr over the last couple of sts of 5^th leg. Miss 2 sts on body, sl st in next st.

7th Leg

Sl st in 1^st 3 sts of 6^th leg. 20 ch.

 

Miss 1^st 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 6 ch, 2 tr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 6 sts, 1 dtr in each remaining ch and next 2 sts at end of 6^th leg, miss last st.   Sl st in bottom of 1^st leg. Fasten off.

8th Leg

Using (105) Bridal White work 24 ch.

 

Miss 2 ch, work 1 tr in each of next 7 sts, (a joined tr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, a joined htr over next 2 sts, 1 htr in following st, a joined htr over last 2 sts, 2 ch, sl st in last st. Fasten off.

Outer Eyes (Make 2)

Using (404) English Tea make a magic loop.

 

1 ch, work 8 htr in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1^st st. Fasten off.

Inner Eyes (Make 2)

Using (105) Bridal White make a magic loop.

 

1 ch, work 4 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1^st st. Fasten off.

Spots (Make about 24 if desired)

Using (201) Electric Blue make a magic loop.

 

1 ch, work 3 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1^st st. Fasten off, I left a long tail to stitch it to the octopus.

To Make Up

Weave in ends. Embroider a dash on each inner eye.

Stitch the inner eyes to the outer eyes.

Attach the eyes to the head.

Bend the ends of 4^th and 7^th legs over and sew them down.

Stitch the 8^th leg in behind the other legs.

Sew on the spots if desired.
