Today I’ve got a crochet pattern for a crochet monkey appliqué. I’ve also included one design with hair and one without to give you some choice about how your monkey will look.

This pattern will use UK terminology, for the US terminology go to Crochet Monkey Pattern (US Version).

Monkey Crochet Pattern

Abbreviations

• st – stitch
• sts – stitches
• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• dc – double crochet
• htr – half treble crochet
• tr – treble crochet
• dtr – double treble crochet 

Materials Used

• Small amounts of brown, tan or cream, white, yellow and black cotton or wool.
• Crochet hook.
• Thread to sew together and embroider on face.
• Sewing needle.
• Scissors.
• Darning needle to weave in ends. 

Head

Make a magic loop.
Row 1:  3 ch. Work 14 tr into loop and pull tight. Slip st. into 3^rd ch.
Row 2:  3 ch. Work 2 tr into each tr. Join with a sl st in 3^rd ch.
Row 3:  3 ch.  *Work 1 tr in each of next 2 tr and 2 tr in following tr, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st. in 3^rd ch. Do not fasten off.

Ears

2 ch, 1 tr and 1 dtr in same st as 2 ch, work 1 dtr, 1 tr, 2 ch and sl st in next st.  Fasten off.
Miss 15 stitches and work another ear the same over the next 2 stitches.  Fasten off.

Body

Make a magic loop.
Row 1:  3 ch. Work 14 tr into loop and pull tight. Slip st. into 3^rd ch.
Row 2:  3 ch. Work 2 tr into each tr. Join with a sl st.
Row 3:  3 ch.  *Work 1 tr in each of next 2 tr and 2 tr in following tr, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st. in 3^rd ch.
Row 4:  3 ch.  *Work 1 tr in each of next 2 tr and 2 tr in following tr, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st. in 3^rd ch.

Tail

22 ch, miss 2 ch work 2 htr in each of next 2 ch, (2 tr in next st and 1 tr in following st) 2 times, work 2 tr in each of next 2 sts, (1 tr in next st and 2 tr in following st) 3 times, work 1 tr in each st to last, work 3 tr in last st.  Sl st into body.

Tummy Part

Make a magic loop.
Row 1:  3 ch, 2 tr, 3 dtr, 6 tr, 3 dtr, 3 tr. Pull loop tight and sl st in 3^rd ch.
Row 2: 4 ch, 1 dtr in same place as ch, 2 dtr in each st to halfway, 2 tr in next st, 2 htr in each st to last, 2 tr in last st, sl st into 4^th ch.
Row 3: 2 ch, 1 htr in same place as ch, *1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 2 htr in following st*, repeat around. Sl st into 2^nd ch.  Fasten off.

Face Part

Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, 12 tr into loop and pull loop tight.  Join with a sl st into 3^rd ch.
Row 2: 3 ch. Work 2 tr into each tr. Join with a sl st in 3^rd ch.
Row 3: 1 ch, 1 dc in next 2 sts, into next st work 1 htr and 1 tr, work 2 dtr in following st and 1 tr and 1 htr in next st. then 1 dc, 1 htr and 1 tr in following st, 2 dtr in next st and 1 tr and 1 htr in following st, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 htr in next st, work 1 dc in each st to last, work 2 htr in last st, sl st into ch.  Fasten off.

Outer Eyes (Make 2)

Make a magic loop.
3 ch, work a 3 tr cluster into loop. Pull loop tight.  Fasten off.

Inner Eyes (Make 2)

Make a magic loop.
1 ch, 3 dc into loop.  Pull loop tight and sl st into ch.  Fasten off.

Feet (Make 2)

9 ch, work 6 dtr in 5^th ch from the hook, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr and then 1 tr, work 6 tr in last st, work 1 tr, 1 htr 1 tr in the back of the trs and htr. Sl st into ch at the top of row. * Sl st into next st, 2 ch, 1 htr into same st, 2 ch, sl st into same st.* repeat 3 times. Fasten off.

Arms (Make 2)

11ch, work 1 tr in 4^th ch from hook, work 2 tr in each of next 3 ch, 1 tr in each of next 2 ch, 2 tr in next st and 3 tr in last st, 3 ch and sl st into same st. 1 ch, work 1 dc in back of ch around to end of 1^st curve.  Fasten off.

Banana

Using yellow make a magic loop.
3 ch, work 2 tr into loop.  Pull loop tight.  Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, 1 tr in next 2 sts, 3 ch work 1 tr just below ch.  Fasten off.

Join cream cotton into top of beginning 3 ch of previous row, 3 ch, work a 2 tr cluster over remaining 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Join yellow just under where cream cotton was joined and work 3 ch and 1 tr.  Fasten off.

To make up

Weave in ends.  Attach inner eyes to outer eyes.

Attach eyes to face and embroider in nose and mouth.

Sew the tummy piece on to the body and the face piece on to the head.

Position the arms onto the body as shown and stitch them on, then stitch the head on over the top.

Attach the feet and the banana.

Hair (Optional)

If you would like your monkey to have its hair sticking up join cotton one stitch off centre on the top of its head, work 3 ch, miss 1 ch and work sl sts over 2 ch and into same st at head, sl st into next st and work 4 ch, miss 1^st ch, work a sl st into other 3 ch and same st on head, sl st into next st and work 3 ch, miss 1^st ch and work sl sts into each st. sl st into head.  Fasten off.
