Welcome to my crochet magpie pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished magpie applique will look like.

Crochet Magpie Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (110) Black, (106) Snow White and (393) Charcoal.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Thread and needle to stitch the magpie together.
- White thread to embroider on the markings and brown thread or a bead for the eye.
Size
Large magpie (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
14cm wide x 12cm high or 5.5” wide x 4.75” high
Medium magpie (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
10cm wide x 8cm high or 4” wide x 3” high
Small magpie (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
8cm wide x 5.5cm high or 3” wide x 2.25” high
Head & Body
Using (110) Black work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 tr in last ch.
Work along the side of tr.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in top of tr, 1 dc in middle of tr, 2 dc in bottom of tr. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. 7 ch. (5 sts + 7 ch)
Row 5: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 7: 2 ch, work 1 htr and 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 9: 2 ch, work 1 htr and 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 13: 2 ch, work 1 htr and 1 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (16 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 15: Work 1 ch tightly, sl st in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as last sl st,1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 5 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 18: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, a joined tr over last 3 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 20: 3 ch, work a joined tr over 1st 3 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 21: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 22: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 23: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 24: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 25: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 26: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st to start of row 24. Don’t fasten off.
Tail
8 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in 1st st of row 24, turn, 1 sl st in each of 1st 6 sts on tail, 2 ch, turn, 1 sl st in each of last 5 sts, sl st in last st of row 24, turn, 1 sl st in each of 1st 4 sts along tail, 2 ch, turn, sl st in last 3 sts along tail, sl st in last st of row 24. Fasten off.
Wing
Using (110) Black work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 tr in next ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Rows 3-4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. Turn. (1 st)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Bottom of Wing
Row 1: 4 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch, and each of next 6 sts on wing, sl st in next st. Turn.
Row 2: Sl st in 1st st, 1 dc in front loop of each remaining st, sl st in end of wing.
Row 3: 3 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 htr in each remaining ch, 1 dc in back loop of each of next 8 sts on wing, sl st in following 2 sts. Fasten off.
Join (106) Snow White 6 sts along bottom from end of wing.
(3 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in next st on wing) 3 times, (2 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next st on wing) 4 times. Fasten off.
Back Marking
Using (106) Snow White work 4 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, 1 dc in last ch.
Work into side of dc from row 1.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in the side of dc. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st to end of row 2, pass the loop behind work to other side of row 2. Work 1 sl st in each st to beginning of row 8, 3 ch, miss 1st ch, sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in 1st st of row 8, 1 sl st in next st, 1 ch, sl st in next st, 2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl in end of row 8. Fasten off.
Marking Near Wing
Using (106) Snow White work 8 ch.
Miss 2 ch, work a joined htr over next 2 ch, 1 dc in each of following 2 ch, 1 sl st in each of last 2 ch, sl st in the back of ch in each of 1st 4 sts, work 4 ch tightly. Fasten off, I left a tail at end to stitch it down.
1st Leg
Join (393) Charcoal where shown.
8 ch. Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, (3 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch and same place as last sl st from 1st claw) 2 times, 1 dc in next ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in same place as join. Fasten off.
2nd Leg
Join (393) Charcoal in body about 5 sts after 1st leg where shown.
9 ch. Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, (3 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch and same place as last sl st from 1st claw) 2 times, 1 dc in next ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in same place as join. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider markings on beak.
Stitch the wing down.
Attach the back marking.
Sew the wing marking near the wing.
Stitch a brown bead to the head for the eye or embroider on an eye.
