Crochet Letterbox Pattern (UK Version)

Welcome to my crochet letterbox pattern. This is another request that I received. The finished London letterbox applique will look like this.

Crochet Letterbox Pattern

Abbreviations

Materials Used

Size

Large letterbox (Using 8 ply wool & a 3mm hook)

16.5cm x 7cm or 6.5” x 2.75”

Medium letterbox (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

11cm x 5cm or 4.25” x 2”

Small letterbox (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

9cm x 4cm or 3.5” x 1.5”

Letterbox

Using black work 12 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 4:  3 ch, working in back loop only of each st work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts and a joined tr over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Join red cotton.

Rows 4-26:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Join brown leaving the red attached at end of row 26.

Row 27:  1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st to end. Fasten brown cotton off.

Bring red cotton up to 1st st at beginning of brown row.

Row 28:  2 ch, working into back loop only of each sl st of previous row work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 29:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Join brown leaving the red attached at end of row 29.

Row 30:  1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st to end.  2 ch.  Fasten off brown cotton.

Bring red cotton up to 1st st at beginning of brown row. 

Work 3 ch.

Row 31:  Miss 1 ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch, 1 dc in back loop only of each sl st of previous row and 1 dc in each of the 2 ch worked in brown.  Turn.  (15 sts)

Row 32:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in each st to last 4 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each of last 3 sts.  (15 sts)

Row 33:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Change to brown leaving red cotton attached to use for neatening row.

Row 34:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 1 tr in each of following 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 35:  1 ch, 1 dc in each st to end.  Fasten off brown cotton.

Neatening Row

Using the same colours as the letterbox work 1 dc in each st around sides and bottom.  Fasten off.

Slot

Using brown work 7 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch.  Fasten off.

Join black in back loop of 1st st.

1 ch, work 1 sl st in same st as ch, 1 sl st in back loop of each st to end.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Using red work 1 dc in each st along sides and 1 dc, 1 ch and 1 dc in corner sts.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Sign

Using white work 4 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Rows 2-3:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 dc in each st along sides and 1 dc, 1 ch and 1 dc in corner sts.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Attach the slot to the letterbox just below the bottom row of brown.

Embroider some markings on the sign if desired.

Stitch the sign to the letterbox just below the slot.
