Welcome to my crochet lantern pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished lantern applique will look like.

Crochet Lantern Pattern

Abbreviations

• st – stitch
• sts – stitches
• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• sc – single crochet
• hdc – half double crochet
• dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

• Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (115) Hot Red and (403) Lemonade.
• A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
• A darning needle to weave in ends.
• Thread and needle to stitch the lantern together.
• Scissors.

Size

Large lantern (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

5cm wide x 10.5cm high or 2” wide x 4” high

Medium lantern (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

3.5cm wide x 7.5cm high or 1.25” wide x 3” high

Small lantern (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

2cm wide x 5cm high or 0.75” wide x 2” high

 

Lantern

Using (115) Hot Red make a magic loop.

 

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 sc in circle.  Pull circle tight.  Turn.  (1 st)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 4 sc in st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 3 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 3 sc in last st.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 4:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, 1 hdc in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 5:  7 ch, (miss 2 sts, work 1 dtr in next st, 2 ch) 2 times, 1 dtr in last st.  Turn.

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 sc in 1^st st, (2 sc in ch space, 1 sc in top of next dtr) 2 times, 3 sc over next 2 ch.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 7:  Sl st to 3^rd st, 1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in each of next 5 sts.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts and a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work a joined sc over the 2 sts.  Don’t turn or fasten off.

Hanger and Neatening Row

18 ch, join with a sl st in first ch worked.  Work 1 sl st in each st around to centre bottom st, 3 ch, sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 sc in last ch, sl st in each st to hanger.  Fasten off.

Light

Using (403) Lemonade work 8 ch.

 

Row 1:  Miss 1^st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Rows 2-4:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Stitch the light behind the gaps in the lantern.
