Today I’m going to be showing you a crochet koala pattern that I’ve designed. Here’s what the crochet koala will look like.

Crochet Koala Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (074) Mercury, (393) Charcoal, (106) Snow White and (110) Black.
- Crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Thread to sew koala together.
- Sewing needle.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors
Size
Medium koala (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
13cm x 10cm or 5” x 4”
Small koala (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
11.5cm x 10.5cm or 4.5” x 4.25”
Head
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch. Work 14 dc into loop and pull tight. Sl st into 3rd ch.
Row 2: 3 ch. Work 1 dc in same place as ch and 2 dc into each dc. Join with a sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 3: 3 ch. *Work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc and 2 dc in following dc, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st. in 3rd ch.
Row 4: 3 ch. *Work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc and 2 dc in following dc, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 5: 3 ch. *Work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc and 2 dc in following dc, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st in 3rd ch. Don’t fasten off.
1st Ear
Join white 2 sts on from end of last row.
Row 1: 2 ch, 1 hdc in same place, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 dec hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st until last 2 sts, 1 dec hdc over last 2 sts, turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, Work 1 dec hdc over 1st 2 sts, a 3 hdc cluster over next 3 sts and a dec hdc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Outside of Ear
Using the cotton from the head work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts around ear, (work 2 dtr in next st and 1 dtr in following st, 2 hdc in next st,) 3 times, continue around ear working 1 dc in each st. Fasten off.
2nd Ear
Join white 17 sts on from last ear.
Row 1: 2 ch, 1 hdc in same place, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 dec hdc over 1st 2 sts, 1 hdc in each st until last 2 sts, 1 dec hdc over last 2 sts, turn.
Row 3: 2 ch, Work 1 dec hdc over 1st 2 sts, a 3 hdc cluster over next 3 sts and a dec hdc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Outside of Ear
Join light grey cotton 2 sts before start of inner ear work 1 dc in each of 1st 6 sts around ear, (work 2 dtr in next st and 1 dtr in following st, 2 hdc in next st,) 3 times, continue around ear working 1 dc in each st. Fasten off.
Nose
Make a magic loop.
4 ch, 1 tr, 4 dc, 3 tr, 4 dc, 1 tr, join with a sl st in the 4th ch.
Row 2: 2 ch, 1 hdc in same st as ch, 2 hdc in each st, join with a sl st in the 2nd ch. Fasten off.
Outer Eye (Make 2)
Make a magic loop.
2 ch, 10 hdc into circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 2nd ch. Fasten off.
Inner Eye (Make 2)
Make a magic loop.
1 ch, 8 sc in loop. Pull loop tight and join with a sl st in ch. Fasten off.
Body
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch. Work 14 dc into loop and pull tight. Sl st into 3rd ch.
Row 2: 3 ch. Work 1 dc in same place as ch and 2 dc into each dc. Join with a sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 3: 3 ch. *Work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc and 2 dc in following dc, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st. in 3rd ch.
Row 4: 3 ch. *Work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc and 2 dc in following dc, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 5: 3 ch. *Work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc and 2 dc in following dc, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st in 3rd ch. Fasten off.
White part of body
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch. Work 14 dc into loop and pull tight. Sl st into 3rd ch.
Row 2: 3 ch. Work 1 dc in same place as ch and 2 dc into each dc. Join with a sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 3: 3 ch. *Work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc and 2 dc in following dc, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st. in 3rd ch.
Row 4: 3 ch. *Work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc and 2 dc in following dc, * repeat from * to * to end, sl st in 3rd ch. Fasten off.
Foot (Make 2)
Row 1: 8 ch, 4 tr in 5th ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 3 hdc in last st, 1 hdc in back of next 2 ch, sl st in 4th ch.
Row 2: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 2 dc in each st around. Sl st in 3rd ch. Fasten off.
Leg (Make 2)
Row 1: 8 ch, 4 tr in 5th ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 3 hdc in last st, 1 hdc in back of next 2 ch, sl st in 4th ch.
Row 2: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 2 dc in each st around. Sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 3: 3 ch *Work 1 dc in each of next 2 dc and 2 dc in following dc * repeat from * to * to end, sl st in 3rd ch. Fasten off.
Arm (Make 2)
30 ch.
Miss 4 ch, work 1 tr in each of the next 14 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 7 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 4 ch and 4 hdc in last ch, work 1 hdc in back of next 4 ch, 1 dc in back of next 7 ch and 1 tr in back of next 14 ch. Fasten off.
Right Claw
Join cotton to 1st of the 4 htr at end of arm.
6 ch, sl st in same st, sl st into next st 6 ch, sl st into same st, sl st into next st 6 ch, sl st into same st, sl st into next st 4 ch sl st into same st. Fasten off.
Left Claw
Join cotton to 1st of the 4 htr at end of arm.
4 ch, sl st in same st, sl st into next st 6 ch, sl st into same st, sl st into next st 6 ch, sl st into same st, sl st into next st 6 ch sl st into same st. Fasten off.
Paw pads (Make 2)
Make a magic loop.
1 ch, 8 sc in loop. Pull loop tight and join with a sl st in ch. Fasten off.
To make up
Weave in ends. Join inner eye to outer eye.
Attach nose to head. Embroider in a mouth.
Sew the eyes onto the head each side of the nose.
Attach the white part of the body to the body.
Sew the paw pads and the claws onto the feet.
Attach the feet to the legs.
Sew the legs to the body.
Position the arms just under the head as shown and sew on.
Sew the head to the body and stitch the arms to the body bending them into position as shown.
