Welcome to this weeks crochet pattern, a crochet kangaroo. This is what the finished crochet kangaroo will look like.

This pattern would also go well with another Australian animal that I made earlier, a Crochet Koala.
Crochet Kangaroo Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Light grey and dark grey (you could use brown and tan), white and black cotton or wool.
- Crochet hook.
- Scissors.
- Thread to sew together.
- Sewing needle.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Black and red embroidery cotton if desired to embroider on a mouth.
- Small white seed beads for the joey’s eyes if desired.
Head
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch. Work 14 dc into circle and pull circle tight. Sl st into 3rd ch.
Row 2: 3 ch. 1 dc in same place as ch. Work 2 dc into each st around. Join with a sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 3: 2 ch, 1 hdc in same place as ch (1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in following st) 4 times, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 2 dc in next st, 1 hdc in next st and 1 sc in following st, 1 hdc in following st, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in next st, sl st into top of 2ch.
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 sc into each dc and hdc of previous row and 1 sl st into each sc from previous row. Fasten off.
1st Ear
Join lighter colour 7 sts up from the sl st at top of right cheek.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 1 dc in same st. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch and 1 dc in top of 3 ch from previous row. Turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, work a dc cluster over all sts. Fasten off.
2nd Ear
Join lighter colour 7 sts up from the sl st at top of left cheek.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 1 dc in same st. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch and 1 dc in top of 3 ch from previous row. Turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, work a dc cluster over all sts. Fasten off.
Outer Ears
Join main colour to the tip of first ear.
Work 1 sc in each st until half way down ear, work 1 hdc in each of remaining sts, sl st into head. Sl st in each st to the centre st between ears. Work 3 ch, miss 1st ch, sl st into remaining ch and sl st into same place on head, work 4 ch, miss 1st ch, sl st into remaining ch and sl st into same place on head, work 3 ch, miss 1st ch and sl st into remaining ch and sl st into same place on head. Sl st into each st to the 2nd ear. Work 1 hdc in each st to halfway up ear and then 1 sc into each st to tip of ear. Fasten off.
Outer Eye (Make 2)
Make a magic loop.
Work 2 ch and 6 hdc into circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 2nd ch. Fasten off.
Inner Eye (Make 2)
Make a magic loop.
Work 1 ch and 3 sc into circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in ch. Fasten off.
Nose
Make a magic loop.
Work 2 ch and a 3 hdc cluster into circle. Pull circle tight but don’t join. Fasten off.
Body
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch. Work 14 dc into circle and pull circle tight. Sl st into 3rd ch.
Row 2: 3 ch. 1 dc in same place as ch. Work 2 dc into each st around. Join with a sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 3: 3 ch, work 1 dc in same place as ch (1 dc in each of next 2 sts and 2 dc in following st) repeat to end, sl st in 3rd ch.
Row 4: 3 ch, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts. Turn.
Row 5: 3 ch, 1 joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 6: 3 ch, 1 joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined dc over last 2 sts.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st down to the st before the circle starts, work a hdc cluster over the next 3 sts, work 1 sc in each st around to the st before the circle finishes, work a hdc cluster over the next 3 sts, work 1 sc in each st to end of row. Sl st in ch. Fasten off.
Pouch
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 7 dc in circle, pull circle tight but don’t join. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, work 1 dc in same place as ch and 2 dc in each st across to end, work 1 dc in top of 3 ch from previous row. Turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, work 1 dc in same place as ch (1 dc in each of next 2 sts and 2 dc in following st) repeat across to end of row, work 1 dc in top of 3 ch. Turn.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sc in each st around the half circle and then 1 sc in each st across the flat top of the half circle. Don’t fasten off.
Join Pouch to Body
Position the pouch evenly on the body and work 1 sc through one loop of each the body and the pouch in each st around the curve of the circle of the pouch. Fasten off.
Leg (Make 2)
12 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch and work 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, 1 sc in each of next 6 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 5: 1 ch, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 7: 1 ch, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 8: 1 ch, 1 joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 9: 1 ch, 1 joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, 1 joined sc over last 2 sts.
Neatening Row
For the 2nd leg turn it over before working the neatening row, so they face in different directions.
1 ch work 1 sc in each st around. Fasten off.
Tail
22 ch.
Miss 2 ch, work 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined hdc over following 2 sts, 1 hdc into each of next 4 sts, 1 joined dc over next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, work 1 tr in each st to end.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around tail. Fasten off.
Joey
Head
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch. Work 14 dc into circle and pull circle tight. Sl st into 3rd ch. Fasten off.
Inner Ear
Join contrast cotton to head.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 2 hdc in same st as ch. Turn.
Row 2: 2 ch, work a hdc cluster over all sts. Fasten off.
Join for 2nd inner ear 4 sts on from 1st ear and work the same.
Outer Ears
Join main colour cotton to tip of 1st ear.
Work 1 sc in each st down the ear, 1 sl st in each st on head between ears and 1 sc in each st up to tip of ear. Fasten off.
Body
Make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch. Work 14 dc into circle and pull circle tight. Sl st into 3rd ch.
Row 2: 3 ch, work 1 dc in same place as ch, work 2 dc in each st to last 4 sts, work a tr cluster over last 4 sts working 2 tr in each st and on the last st sl st into the 3 ch at beginning of row halfway through the st. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider a small white dot to the inner eye.
Attach the inner eyes to the outer eyes.
Stitch the nose over the centre circle and embroider a mouth underneath.
Embroider a nose and mouth to the joey’s head.
Sew on beads for the joey’s eyes.
The joey’s body is attached to the head with about 5 stitches above halfway up the head, leaving the bottom unattached so it can bend out over the pouch.
Stitch the kangaroo’s head to the body.
Attach the legs to the body.
Crochet the arms to the kangaroo.
Arms
For the kangaroo’s right arm join cotton to the 2nd st down from the head, for the left arm join cotton 3rd st down from head.
Row 1: 2 ch, 1 hdc in same place, 1 hdc in next st. Turn.
Rows 2-4: 2 ch I hdc in each st. Turn.
Row 5: 2 ch, 1 hdc cluster over all sts. Fasten off.
Sew on the tail.
Slip the Joey into the pouch.
