Crochet Japanese Bridge Pattern (UK Version)

Welcome to my crochet Japanese bridge pattern. This pattern was a request. This is what the finished Japanese bridge applique will look like.

Crochet Japanese Bridge Pattern

Abbreviations

Materials Used

Size

Large bridge (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

24cm wide x 12cm high or 9.5” wide x 4.5” high

Medium bridge (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

15cm wide x 7cm high or 6” wide x 2.75” high

Small bridge (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

12cm wide x 6cm high or 4.75” wide x 2.5” high

Bridge Support

Using (115) Hot Red work 42 ch.

 

Miss 3 ch, (work 1 tr in each of next 4 ch, 2 tr in following ch) repeat to last 4 ch, 1 tr in each of last 4 ch.  Fasten off.

Deck

Join (074) Mercury to ch left at the beginning of bridge support.

3 ch, working into the back loop only work a joined dtr over next 3 sts, join in (393) Charcoal and work 1 dtr in following st, (change to Mercury and work 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, change to Charcoal work 1 dtr in following st) repeat to last 3 sts of the bridge support, change to Mercury, work a joined dtr over last 3 sts.  Fasten off.

Join (110) Black to 1st loop left from bridge support.

Work 1 sl st in each loop left along the top of the bridge support.  Fasten off.

1st Near Post

Using (115) Hot Red work 14 ch.

 

Miss 2 ch, work 1 tr in each ch to last ch, 2 tr in the last ch.  Fasten off.

2nd Near Post

Using (115) Hot Red work 15 ch.

 

Miss 2 ch, work 1 tr in each ch to last 2 ch, a joined tr over last 2 ch.  Fasten off.

Near Post Tops (Make 2)

Using (393) Charcoal make a magic loop,

 

1 ch, work 3 dc in the circle.  Pull the circle tight and join with a sl st in top of ch.  2 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in side of the circle.  Fasten off leaving a longer tail to join it to the post.

1st Far Post

Join (115) Hot Red 4 sts before the end of the deck where shown.

11 ch.

 

Miss 1 ch, work 1 htr in each ch to the last ch, 2 htr in last ch, sl st in next st on deck.  Fasten off.

2nd Far Post

Join (115) Hot Red 3 sts from the start of the deck where shown.

12 ch.

 

Miss 1 ch, work 1 htr in each ch to last 2 ch, a joined htr over last 2 ch, sl st in next st along the deck.  Fasten off.

Far Post Tops (Make 2)

Using (393) Charcoal make a magic loop,

 

1 ch, work 2 dc in the circle.  Pull the circle tight and join with a sl st in top of ch.  2 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in side of the circle.  Fasten off leaving a longer tail to join it to the post.

Centre Near Post

Using (115) Hot Red work 11 ch.

 

Miss 1st ch, work 1 htr in each remaining ch.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  I gathered in the bottom of the bridge support a bit by threading cotton through and pulling it into shape.

Attach the post tops to the posts.

Stitch the near side posts to the ends of the deck.  Sew the middle post halfway between the side posts.

Centre Far Post

Join (115) Hot Red to stitch before the near centre post and work 9 ch.

Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch, sl st in behind near post.  Fasten off.

I pin the bridge into the shape I want before working the rails to get the size right.

Near Top Rail

Using (115) Hot Red work enough chain to go from 1st near post to 2nd near post and over the middle post.

 

Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch.  Fasten off.

Far Top Rail

Using (115) Hot Red work enough chain tightly to go from 1st far post to 2nd far post and over middle post.  Fasten off.

Middle Rail

Using (115) Hot Red work enough chain tightly to go from 1st near post to 2nd near post and halfway up the middle post.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Attach the top rails between the end posts and to the top of the middle posts.

Sew the middle rail halfway down the near posts.

And there’s the finished Japanese bridge applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes.
