Welcome to my crochet hedgehog pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished hedgehog applique will look like.

Crochet Hedgehog Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (254) Moon Rock and (162) Black Coffee.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the hedgehog together and black thread to embroider on the mouth.
- A black bead for the eye.
- White fabric paint or white thread for the dot in the eye if desired.
Size
Large hedgehog (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
12cm wide x 8cm high or 4.5” wide x 3” high
Medium hedgehog (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
9cm wide x 6cm high or 3.5” wide x 2.25” high
Small hedgehog (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
6cm wide x 4.5cm high or 2.25” wide x 1.75” high
Head
Using (254) Moon Rock make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc and 1 htr in st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 3 dc in 1st st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 2 htr in next st, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 8: 2 ch, 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
Work 1 sl st in each st around. Don’t fasten off.
Near Front Leg
Turn work and work into last sl st worked.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc into back loop only of each of 1st 2 sts. 2 ch. (2 sts + 2 ch)
Row 2: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the 2 sts. Fasten off.
Far Front Leg
Join (254) Moon Rock on wrong side in loop left of 2nd st behind other leg.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in front loop only of next st. 2 ch. (2 sts + 2 ch)
Row 2: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the 2 sts. Fasten off.
Back
Using (162) Black Coffee work 6 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 tr in following ch, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 9 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)
Rows 6-9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (12 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 10 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 12: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 4 sts, a joined dc over next 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
(2 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next st) repeat in each st around. Fasten off.
Ear
Using (254) Moon Rock make a magic loop leaving a long tail at beginning to attach it to head.
3 ch, sl st in circle. Pull circle tight and fasten off.
Nose
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 2 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 1st st. Fasten off leaving a long tail to attach it to the head.
Back Leg
Using (254) Moon Rock work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Rows 2-3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. 2 ch. (2 sts + 2 ch)
Row 5: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the 2 sts. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider a mouth on the head.
Stitch the nose to point of head.
Sew the body to head where shown.
Attach the ear.
Stitch the back leg to the body.
Attach a bead for the eye.
Add a white dot to centre of bead if desired.
And there’s the finished hedgehog appliqué. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
