Welcome to my crochet gymnast pattern. This was a request. This is what the finished gymnast applique will look like.

Crochet Gymnast Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (115) Hot Red, (105) Bridal White and (162) Black Coffee.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Sewing thread and a needle to stitch the gymnast together.
- A small black bead for the eye if desired.
Size
Large gymnast (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
12.5cm wide x 18cm high or 5” wide x 7” high
Medium gymnast (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
9.5cm wide x 12.5cm high or 3.75” wide x 5” high
Small gymnast (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
6cm wide x 9.5cm high or 2.5” wide x 3.75” high
Leotard
Using (115) Hot Red work 3 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in last ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Rows 2-4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Rows 6-8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 9: 2 ch, work 1 htr and 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Rows 12-13: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st end. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 16: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 htr in next st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 4 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 19: 3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 2 tr in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 20: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st. 4 ch. (2 sts + 4 ch)
Row 21: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, 2 htr in last ch, sl st in 1st st of row 20. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st to 1st st of row 19. Fasten off.
Left Leg
Using (105) Bridal White work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 tr in following ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc over same st as last part of joined dc and last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 10: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc and htr over same st as last part of joined dc and last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 12: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. Turn. (1 st)
Rows 14-17: 1 ch, work 1 dc in st. Turn. (1 st)
Row 18: 1 ch, work 1 dc in st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Stitch the left leg in the section of the leotard where shown.
Right Leg
Join (105) Bridal White to the last st of leotard where shown.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc over same st as last part of joined dc and last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc and htr over same st as last part of joined dc and last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 9: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. Turn. (1 st)
Rows 11-14: 1 ch, work 1 dc in st. Turn. (1 st)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 dc in st. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join (105) Bridal White to the last st of leotard.
Work 1 sl st in each st around the leg. Fasten off.
Ballet Slippers (Make 2)
Using (115) Hot Red work 6 ch
Work 1 htr and 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Hand
Join (105) Bridal White to 2nd st of the arm.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in next st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. 4 ch. (2 sts + 4 ch)
Row 3: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, 1 htr in last ch, a joined htr over the 2 sts. Fasten off.
Hair
Using (162) Black Coffee work 6 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 tr in following ch, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in last ch. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Rows 4-5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 6: 3 ch, work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 2 ch, sl st in same st as last part of joined tr, sl st in each of next 2 sts, 2 ch, 1 htr in same st as ch, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st. Turn. (1 st)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 2 dc in st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 9: 2 ch, work a joined htr over the 2 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join (162) Black Coffee to 1st st of row 6.
Work 1 sl st in 1st st, 1 dc in each st around to last st of row 6. Fasten off.
Ponytail
Join (162) Black Coffee 1 st after middle st at top of the head.
15 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, (a joined dc over following 2 sts) 2 times, 1 dc in each remaining ch, sl st in same st on the head as ch, sl st in next st. Turn.
Row 2: 1 dc in each of 1st 4 sts, (a joined dc over next 2 sts) 2 times, 1 sl st in following st. 3 ch.
Row 3: Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 sl st in each st to head, sl st in head. Fasten off.
Scrunchie
Using (115) Hot Red work 8 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch. Fasten off.
Head
Using (105) Bridal White work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. 4 ch. (2 sts + 4 ch)
Row 4: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each remaining ch, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 4 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in following st, 1 ch, sl st in next st, 1 dc in each st to end of row, sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Sew the scrunchie to the ponytail.
Attach the ballet slippers to the feet.
Embroider a mouth to the head.
Stitch the hair to the head.
Attach a bead for the eye or embroider on an eye.
Add a white dot in the middle of the bead if desired.
Sew the head where shown.
