Crochet Golden Retriever Pattern (UK Version)

Welcome to my crochet golden retriever pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished golden retriever applique will look like.

Crochet Golden Retriever Pattern

Abbreviations

Materials Used 

Size 

Large Golden Retriever (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

13.5cm wide x 14.5cm high or 5.25” wide x 5.75” high

Medium Golden Retriever (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

9.5cm wide x 9.5cm high or 3.75” wide x 3.75” high

Small Golden Retriever (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

7cm wide x 7cm high or 2.75” wide x 2.75” high

Muzzle

Using (130) Old Lace make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 3 dc, 1 htr, 3 tr, 1 htr and 1 dc in circle.  Pull the circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Join (110) Black halfway down the side.

Work 1 sl st in the back loop of each stitch around the thicker end until even with join.  Fasten off.

Head

Using (110) Black work 4 ch.

Row 1:  Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 tr in next st, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Join in (179) Topaz and fasten off the black.

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Rows 4-5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in the next st, a joined dc over the last 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 tr in next st, 1 dc in last st.  Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

Using Topaz, work 1 dc in each st of the Topaz and 1 sl st in each st around the Black.  Join with a sl st in the top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

1st Ear

Join (383) Ginger Gold 3 sts down from the top of the head where shown.

5 ch.  1 sl st and 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in each of last 2 ch, sl st in the same place as join.  Fasten off.

Join Topaz 2 sts before ear.

1 dc in next st, 2 dc in join, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts down the ear, 1 sl st in each st to end of the ear, 2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts on inside of the ear.  Fasten off leaving a tail to stitch it to the head.

2nd Ear

Join (383) Ginger Gold 3 sts down from the top of the head where shown.

5 ch.  1 sl st and 1 dc on 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 dc in each of last 2 ch, sl st in the same place as join.  Fasten off.

Join Topaz 2 sts down inside of the ear.  I left a tail to stitch it to the head.

1 sl st in each st to point, 2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts up ear, 1 dc in each st to join, 2 dc in join, 1 dc in next st, sl st in following st.  Fasten off.

Nose

Using (110) Black make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 1 dc in circle, 1 ch, sl st in circle.  Pull the circle tight and fasten off, leaving a tail to stitch it down.

Body

Using (179) Topaz work 8 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  8 ch.  (9 sts + 8 ch)

Row 4:  Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each remaining ch and each st.  Turn.  (17 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 9:  2 ch, work 1 htr in each of 1st 9 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 11:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 12:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 13:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (17 sts)

Near Back Leg

Row 14:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over the next 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 15:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 16:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over next 2 sts.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 17:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 18:  1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts.  Turn.  (1 st)

Rows 19-22:  1 ch, work 1 dc in st.  Turn.  (1 st)

Row 23:  1 ch, work 2 dc in st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 24:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Fasten off.

Tummy

Join (179) Topaz to 1st st of row 13.

Row 1:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 7 sts, a joined dc over the following 2 sts.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 dc in the front loop only of the following 3 sts, (for the leg to be worked into the back loop) a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Turn the work before neatening the row.

Work (1 ch, 1 dc in next st) in each st along tummy, 1 sl st in each at around back leg, (1 ch, sl st in next st) to top of back, 1 sl st in each st along top of back around neck and 1st 5 sts down front, (2 ch, 1 dc in next st) to end of row, sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Near Front Leg

Join (179) Topaz to 1st loop left from row 2 of tummy.  I left a long tail to use for the neatening row.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Rows 2-4:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over the last 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 3 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 11:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Use the tail left from the beginning of the leg.

Work 1 sl st in each st to after back of the foot, (1 ch, sl st in next st) to end of the leg.  Fasten off.

Far Front Leg

Join (179) Topaz in the back loop only in 2nd decrease in front of the body.  I left a long tail to use for the neatening row.

Row 1:  3 ch, work 1 tr in same st as ch, 1 htr in back loop of next st, 1 dc in back loop of each of following 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of the last 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 3 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Use the tail left from the beginning of the leg.

Work 1 sl st in each st to after back of the foot, (1 ch, sl st in next st) to end of the leg.  Fasten off.

Far Back Leg

Join (179) Topaz in the back loop only 4 sts before the back leg.  I left a long tail to use for the neatening row.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in back loop only of next st, 1 htr in back loop only of following 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts.  Turn.  (1 st)

Rows 6-7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in st.  Turn.  (1 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 dc in st.  3 ch.  (1 st + 3 ch)

Row 9:  Work 1 htr in 3rd ch from hook, 1 htr in st.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Use the tail left from the beginning of the leg.

Work 1 sl st in each st to after back of the foot, (1 ch, sl st in next st) to end of the leg.  Fasten off.

Tail

Using (179) Topaz work 10 ch.

Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, a joined htr over following 2 ch, 1 tr in each ch to end, 3 ch, sl st in last ch.  Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

(1 ch, sl st in next st) in each st around the tail.  Fasten off.

Blaze

Using (383) Ginger Gold or (130) Old Lace work 9 ch.

Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next ch, 1 tr in following ch, 1 dtr in each of next 3 ch, 1 tr in following ch, 1 htr in last ch, 1 ch, sl st in last ch.  Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

(1 ch, sl st in next st) 3 times, (2 ch, sl st in next st) to 2nd last st of 1st side, (1 ch, 1 sl st in next st) to end of 2nd side.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Stitch the ears to the side of the head, leaving last few stitches unstitched.

Attach the nose to the muzzle.

Sew the muzzle to the head.

Embroider on a tongue.

Embroider on eyes.

Sew the tail behind the back legs.

Stitch the head to the body.

Attach the blaze just under the head.

And there’s the finished golden retriever appliqué. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
