Crochet French Bulldog Pattern (UK Version)

Welcome to my crochet French bulldog pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished French bulldog applique will look like.

Crochet French Bulldog Pattern

Abbreviations

st – stitch
sts – stitches
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
dc – double crochet
htr – half treble crochet
tr – treble crochet
dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (106) Snow White, (130) Old Lace, (162) Black Coffee, (254) Moon Rock, (110) Black and a tiny bit of (398) Colonial Rose.
A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
A darning needle to weave in ends.
Scissors.
Sewing thread and a needle to stitch the dog together.
White cotton to embroider markings on eyes.

Size

Large French Bulldog (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

14cm wide x 19cm high or 5.5” wide x 7.5” high

Medium French Bulldog (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

10cm wide x 12cm high or 4” wide x 4.75” high

Small French Bulldog (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

7.5cm wide x 10cm high or 3” wide x 4” high

Head

Using (106) Snow White work 4 ch.

Row 1: Miss 1^st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts and a joined dc over last part of joined dc and last st. Turn. (2 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts and a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. Turn. (1 st)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 3 dc in st. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 7: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 8: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 9: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (7 sts)

Rows 10-11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 12: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 14: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 3 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.

1st Side of Head

Join (162) Black Coffee to 1^st st at top side of head where shown.

Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as join, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in following st, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in following st, a joined tr over next 2 sts. Turn. (13 sts)

Row 2: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, a joined htr over last 3 sts. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 4: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1^st 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (8 sts)

1st Ear

Row 5: 1 ch, work 3 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 2 htr in next st. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 6: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1^st 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, a joined dc over last 3 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 3 sts, 1 htr in each of last 3 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 10: 2 ch, work a joined htr over the 4 sts. Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join (162) Black Coffee to 1^st st of 1^st side of head and ear.

1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st to white. Fasten off.

2nd Side of Head

Join (162) Black Coffee to 1^st st at top side of head on wrong side where shown.

Row 2: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (13 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, a joined htr over last 3 sts. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 4: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1^st 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (8 sts)

2nd Ear

Row 5: 1 ch, work 3 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 2 htr in next st. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 6: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1^st 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, a joined dc over last 3 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 3 sts, 1 htr in each of last 3 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 10: 2 ch, work a joined htr over the 4 sts. Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join (162) Black Coffee to 1^st st of 2^nd side of head and ear.

1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st to white. Fasten off.

Muzzle

Using (106) Snow White work 6 ch.

Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in following st, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 3: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (9 sts)

1st Side

Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over following 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 4 sts. Fasten off.

2nd Side

Join (106) Snow White to 1^st st of row 3.

Row 1: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over following 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 4 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.

Mouth

Join (398) Colonial Rose 1 st from bottom middle of muzzle.

Work 2 dc in bottom middle st, sl st 1 st up from bottom on other side. Fasten off.

Nose

Using (110) Black make a magic loop. I left a long tail at beginning to embroider a marking to the mouth.

2 ch, work 4 htr in circle, pull circle tight. Fasten off.

Inner Ear (Make 2)

Using (254) Moon Rock work 4 ch.

Row 1: Work 1 dc in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 tr in next st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 3. 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 3 sts. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 2 sts, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 4 sts. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Turn 1 inner ear before neatening row.

1 ch. work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.

Eyes (Make 2)

Using (110) Black make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 6 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1^st st. Fasten off.

Body

Using (106) Snow White work 9 ch.

Row 1: Miss 1^st ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (10 sts)

Row 5: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (13 sts)

Row 7: 2 ch, work 1 htr and 1 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (15 sts)

Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (16 sts)

Row 9: 2 ch, work 1 htr and 1 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (17 sts)

Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over following 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, a joined dc over same st as last part of joined dc and last st. Turn. (2 sts)

Row 12: 1 ch, work a joined dc over the 2 sts. Fasten off.

Join (130) Old Lace to side of last st of row 10.

Row 1: Work 1 dc in next st. join in (106) Snow White and work 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (13 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each of next 10 sts, change to (130) Old Lace, 1 dc in each of following 3 sts, sl st in the side of row 11, sl st in top of row 12. Turn. (15 sts)

Row 3: Work 1 dc in each of 1^st 4 sts, leave the (106) Snow White where it is and continue working with the Old Lace, work 1 dc in back loop only of each of next 7 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (16 sts)

Row 4: 2 ch, work 1 htr and 1 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (16 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 dc and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (16 sts)

Row 6: 2 ch, work 1 htr and 1 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (16 sts)

Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, 1 dc in back loop of each st to end. Turn. (15 sts)

Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (14 sts)

Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (11 sts)

Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in each st to end. Fasten off.

Near Front Leg

Use the (106) Snow White left from row 2.

Row 1: Working into front loop only work 1 dc in each of 1^st 5 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)

Neatening Row

Join (106) Snow White to 1^st st of leg.

Work 1 sl st in each st around leg. Fasten off.

Body Neatening Row

Join (106) Snow White to 1^st st of Snow White on back.

1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around to where the Old Lace starts, join in (130) Old Lace and work 1 dc in each st to end of row. Fasten off.

Near Back Leg

Join (106) Snow White to 1^st st in front loop left of row 7.

Row 1: 1 ch, working into the front loop left work 1 dc in same st as join and 1 dc in each of next 6 sts. Turn. (7 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 5 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 3 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. 4 ch. (4 sts + 4 ch)

Row 5: Work 2 dc in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of last 2 ch, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 7 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)

Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join (106) Snow White to 1^st st of near back leg.

Work 1 sl st in each st around leg. Fasten off.

Far Front Leg

Join (106) Snow White in back loop only 3 sts down from point of chest where shown.

Row 1: 3 ch, working into back loop only work 1 tr in same st as join, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each of following 4 sts. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 3 sts, 1 htr in next st, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1^st st, 1 htr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)

Row 7: 2 ch, work 2 htr and 1 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join (106) Snow White to 1^st st of far front leg.

Work 1 sl st in each st around leg. Fasten off.

Far Back Foot

Join (106) Snow White to body in 1^st st under near front leg where shown.

3 ch, work 2 tr in same st as join, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in following st, sl st in next st. Fasten off.

Body Marking

Using (162) Black Coffee work 20 ch.

Row 1: Miss 1^st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in each of following 7 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (20 sts)

Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each of next 13 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts. Turn. (16 sts)

Row 3: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (16 sts)

Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (15 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, sl st into 2^nd and 3^rd sts, 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (13 dc)

Row 6: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 11 sts. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 7: 2 ch, work a joined htr over 1^st 2 sts, 2 ch, sl st in same st as last part of joined htr, sl st in each of next 2 sts, 3 ch, 1 tr in same st as ch and 1 tr in following st, 2 ch, sl st in same st as last tr, sl st in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in following st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.
