Elephant Granny Square Bag Pattern

Abbreviations

Materials Used

Size

16.5cm square or 6.5” square without the strap.  The strap is 32.5cm long or 13” long.

Granny Squares (Make 2)

Make 2 elephant granny squares using the pattern below with an extra row around the edging of the granny square.  Work row 5 twice and then work row 6.

Edge of Bag

Join yarn to the left top of the square. I used a 4mm hook for the rest of the bag.

Chain for Strap

Work enough chain for the handle and join to the top right of the square. (I worked 85 chain)

Sides of Bag and Strap

Row 1: Working into the back loop, only work 1 sc in each st down the sides and 3 sc in corner loops. Once you reach the chain work 1 sc in each ch. Join with a sl st in the top of 1st st.

Rows 2-5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

Join in 2nd Granny Square

Row 6: 1 ch, working through both loops of 1st square and back loop only of 2nd square work 1 sl st in each st down sides and bottom and 1 sc in each of the 3 sts around the corner of 1st square and into the corner loop for the 3 sts of 2nd square until the strap. Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around 1st side of the strap and across the top of the bag. Fasten off.

Join yarn to the bottom of the strap of 2nd side.

1 ch, work 1 sl st in each st around the strap and to the middle of the top of the bag, 20 ch, sl st in same st as last sl st, 1 sl st in each st to strap. Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends. Stitch a button to the top of the bag opposite the loop.

Finished crochet elephant bag landscape

Make a lining for the bag if desired.

And there’s the finished bag. I’ve also made it in different colors.
