Crochet Cockatoo Pattern (UK Version)

Crochet Cockatoo Pattern

Abbreviations 

Materials Used

Head

Make a magic loop.

Row 1:  Work 2 ch and 1 htr into circle.  Pull circle tight.  Work 6 ch.  Turn.

Row 2:  Miss 2 ch and work 1 htr in each remaining ch, the htr and in top of ch.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 3:  2 ch, 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 4:  2 ch, 3 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 5:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 6:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn. 3 ch.   (9 sts + 3 ch)

Row 7:   Miss 1st 2 ch, work 1 htr in last ch, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 8:   2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 9:   2 ch, 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 10:  2 ch, 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 11:   2 ch, 1 htr in each st to last st, 3 htr in last st.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 12:   2 ch, 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 13:   2 ch, 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn.  (17 sts)

Row 14:   2 ch, 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn. (18 sts)

Row 15:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (19 sts)

Row 16:  2 ch, 2 htr in 1st st, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (19 sts)

Row 17:   2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn.  (19 sts)

Row 18:   2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn.  (19 sts)

Row 19:  2 ch, 1 joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn.  (18 sts)

Row 20:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (17 sts)

Row 21:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn.  (17 sts)

Row 22:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.   Turn.  (15 sts)

Row 23:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to end. Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 24:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.   Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 25:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.   Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 26:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.   Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 27:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.    Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 28:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each st to last 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.   Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 29:  2 ch, work a joined htr over 1st 2 sts and a joined htr over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 30:  3 ch, Work a joined tr over both sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around, join with a sl st in 1st st.  Fasten off.

Tail

9 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 2 ch and work 1 htr in each remaining ch.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Rows 2-11:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 12:  3 ch, 1 tr in each of 1st 4 sts, 1 dc in next st, 1 tr in each remaining st.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, 1 dc in each st around tail.  Join with a sl st in 1st st.  Fasten off.

Wing

Make a magic loop.

Row 1:  2 ch, work 1 htr into circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, 1 htr in st and 1 htr in top of ch.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 3:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end. Turn. (2 sts)

Row 4:  2 ch, 1 htr in 1st st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 5:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 6:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 7:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 8:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)

Row 9:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to last st, 2 htr in last st.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Rows 10-12:  2 ch, 1 htr in each st to end. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 13:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 14:  2 ch, a htr cluster over all sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around.  Join with a sl st in 1st st.  Fasten off.

Beak

Join grey cotton at row 6 of body as shown.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, a joined dc over next 2 sts, 1 dc in following st, a joined dc over next 2 sts and 1 dc in following st.  Turn.

Row 2:  1 ch, 1 dc in 1st st, a dc cluster over next 3 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.

Row 3:  2 ch, work a htr cluster over all sts.  Fasten off.

Crest

Join yellow cotton to top of head as shown.

Row 1:  2 ch, work 1 htr in same st as ch, 1 htr in each of next 5 sts, 2 htr in following st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 2 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 5 sts.  Turn.

1st Crest Section

 Row 1:  2 ch, 1 htr in same st as ch, a joined htr over next 2 sts.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, a joined htr over both sts.  Fasten off.

2nd Crest Section

Join cotton in next st on wrong side as shown.

Row 1:  2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 3 sts.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st.  Turn.

Row 3:  2 ch, a joined htr over both sts.  Fasten off.

3rd Crest Section

Join cotton in next st on wrong side as shown.

Row 1:  2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 5 sts.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, a joined htr over last 2 sts.  Turn.

Row 3:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st.  Turn.

Row 4:  2 ch, a joined htr over both sts.  Fasten off.

4th Crest Section

Join cotton in same st as last st of 3rd crest section on wrong side as shown.

Row 1:  2 ch, work 1 htr in each of next 3 sts.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st.  Turn.

Row 3:  2 ch, a joined htr over both sts.  Fasten off.

5th Crest Section

Join cotton in same st as last st of 4th crest section on wrong side as shown.

Row 1:  2 ch, work 1 htr in each of last 3 sts and 1 htr in top of ch.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, 1 htr in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.  Turn.

Row 3:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st.  Turn.

Row 4:  2 ch, a joined htr over both sts.  Fasten off.

Branch

Using brown work 45 ch.

Miss 2 ch, work 1 htr in next st, 3 dtr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 5 dtr in following st, a 3 tr cluster over next 3 sts, 1 tr in each of following 18 sts, 3 tr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 5 sts, 3 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dtr in each st to end.  Fasten off.

Claws (Make 2)

Using grey make a magic loop.

Row 1:  2 ch, into circle work 2 htr, pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn.

Row 2:  2 ch, work a joined htr over both sts.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Stitch tail to the body positioning the top of the tail behind the body as shown.

Attach the wing to the body.

Sew the branch across the body as shown.

Stitch the claws over the branch.

Embroider on an eye or stitch on a black bead.
