Welcome to my crochet cockatiel pattern. This pattern was another request. This is what the finished cockatiel applique will look like. For my next pattern I’ll be decorating the branch with either wattle or gumnut blossoms.

Crochet Cockatiel Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
Materials Used
- Any thickness crochet cotton or yarn, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colors (242) Metal Grey, (106) Snow White, (403) Lemonade, (074) Mercury, (254) Moon Rock, (189) Royal Orange and (393) Charcoal.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- A darning needle to weave in ends.
- Scissors.
- Thread and needle to stitch the cockatiel together.
- Black thread to embroider on an eye.
Size
Large cockatiel (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
13cm wide x 22cm high or 5” wide x 8.5” high
Medium cockatiel (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
9cm wide x 13cm high or 3.5” wide x 5” high
Small cockatiel (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
7cm wide x 9cm high or 2.75” wide x 3.5” high
Face & Crest
Using (403) Lemonade work 9 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 6 ch, 6 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each of next 5 ch, 1 sc in each of last 2 of original ch. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 sc in 1st st. 5 ch. Miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch. 4 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch. 1 sc in st. 3 ch.
Row 3: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch, 1 sc in st and 1 sc in the last sl st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 2 dc in the next st, a joined sc over the last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join (403) Lemonade to 1st st after crest where shown.
Work 1 sl st in each st to row 1. Fasten off.
Beak
Join (254) Moon Rock where shown.
1 ch, work 1 sc in each of the 2 sts. Join to the top side of the face. Fasten off.
Top of Beak
Using (242) Metal Grey work 1 ch, sl st in the bottom corner of the beak, work 1 sl st in each st up the side of the bottom of the beak. Fasten off.
Cheek
Using (189) Royal Orange, make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 sc in the circle. Pull the circle tight. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in st. Fasten off.
Head & Body
Using (242) Metal Grey work 4 ch.
Row 1: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in next st, 1 sc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of last 3 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end. 3 ch. (6 sts + 3 ch)
Row 5: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, join in (106) Snow White and work over the Metal Grey, 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sts, change to Metal Grey and leave the Snow White where it is, 1 sc in each of last 4 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, change to Snow White and leave the Metal Grey where it is, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, change to Metal Grey and leave the Snow White where it is, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 6 sts, change to Snow White and leave the Metal Grey where it is, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sts, change to Metal Grey and leave the Snow White where it is, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 5 sts, change to Snow White and leave the Metal Grey where it is, 1 sc in next st, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sts, change to Metal Grey and leave the Snow White where it is, 1 sc in each st to end. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 12: 5 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, join in (074) Mercury and work over the Metal Grey for 1 st, work 1 sc in 1st st, bring the Metal Grey to the front, leave it there for the end of wing and continue with the Mercury, work 1 sc in back loop only of each of next 4 sts (the end of wing will be worked into the front loop), change to Snow White and leave the Mercury where it is, a joined sc over last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, change to Mercury and leave the Snow White where it is, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 14: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 4 sts, change to Snow White and work over the Mercury, 1 sc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Leave the Snow White where it is for the neatening row and work with the Mercury.
Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 16: 5 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in each remaining ch, sl st in 2nd last st of row 15. Fasten off the Mercury.
End of Wing
Using the Metal Grey left on the body, bring a loop up through 1st front loop left and work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch, sl st in front loop of next st.
Row 2: 4 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch, sl st in front loop of following st.
Row 3: 5 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch, sl st in the same place as the last sl st. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Using the (106) Snow White from the side of the bird, work 1 sl st to last st of white. Fasten off.
Join (242) Metal Grey where shown.
Work 1 sl st in each st to end of back. Fasten off.
Top of Wing
Using (393) Charcoal work 10 ch.
Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, (1 ch, 1 sc in next ch) 2 times, (2 ch, 1 sc in next ch) 4 times, 2 sc in last ch. Work 1 sl st in back of each original ch. Fasten off.
Tail
Join (242) Metal Grey to 4th last st of row 16 in the back loop only (the side tail feathers will be worked into the front loop).
Row 1: 16 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 4 ch, 1 sc in each ch to last ch, 2 sc in the last ch, sl st in back loop of next st. Turn.
Row 2: Working into the front loop only work 1 sc in each of 1st 10 sts up tail feather, 1 sl st in each st to end.
Row 3: 9 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, 1 sl st in back loop of each of 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in back loop of each st to end, sl st in back loop of last st of row 16. Fasten off.
Side Tail Feathers
Join (242) Metal Grey to the 4th last st of row 16 of the body in front loop only.
Row 1: 9 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each of next 4 ch, 1 hdc in each of following 3 ch, 2 hdc in the last ch, miss next st, sl st in front loop of following st. Turn.
Row 2: Working into the front loop only work 1 sc in each of 1st 5 sts, sl st in next st. 5 ch.
Row 3: Miss 1st ch, work 1 sc in each remaining ch, 1 sc in back loop only of each of next 4 sts, 1 hdc in back loop only of each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Sl st in last st of row 16. Fasten off.
Branch
Using (254) Moon Rock work 37 ch.
Miss 2 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 ch, 1 hdc in each of following 2 ch, 1 sc in each of next 3 ch, 1 hdc in following ch, 1 dc in next ch, 3 ch, sl st in same ch as dc, 1 sc in next ch, 1 hdc in each of following 6 ch, 1 sc in each of next 2 ch, 2 sc in following ch, 1 sc in each of next 5 ch, 2 sc in following ch, 1 sl st in each ch to end. Fasten off.
Claw
Join (393) Charcoal 3 sts up from bottom white st where shown.
(3 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in same st as join) 2 times. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Embroider on an eye.
Stitch the cheek to the face.
Sew the feathers down the back and the breast.
Attach the face to the head.
Stitch the top of the wing above the bottom of the wing.
Attach bird to branch.
