Welcome to my crochet clown with a top hat pattern. This is what the finished crochet clown will look like.

Crochet Clown with Top Hat Pattern

Abbreviations

• st – stitch
• sts – stitches
• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• sc – single crochet
• hdc – half double crochet
• dc – double crochet

Materials Used

• I used 5 colours of 8 ply wool which is light worsted in the US and double knit in the UK.
• A crochet hook, I used a 2.5mm hook.
• Scissors.
• A sewing needle and thread to stitch the clown together.
• Darning needle to weave in ends.
• 3 black beads, 2 for the centre of the eyes and 1 for the flower.
• I used a small amount of 4 ply crochet cotton to sl st around the mouth piece.
• A small amount of embroidery or sewing cotton to embroider on a mouth and eyebrows.

Head

Make a magic loop.

Row 1:  2 ch. Work 15 dc into circle and pull circle tight. Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.

Row 2:  2 ch. 1 dc in same place as ch. Work 2 dc into each st around. Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.

Row 3:  2 ch. Work 1 dc in same place as ch (1 dc in each of next 2 sts and 2 dc in following st) repeat to end, sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Hair

Join yarn to any st on head.

3 ch, work a joined dc in same place as ch, 3 ch, sl st in same st as the joined dc, (miss 1 st, sl st into following st, 3 ch, a joined dc in same st as ch, 3 ch, sl st in same st) 3 times.  Work 1 sc into each of next 9 sts (miss 1 st, sl st into following st, 3 ch, a joined dc in same st as ch, 3 ch, sl st in same st) 4 times.  Fasten off.

Eyes (Make 2)

Make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 4 sc into circle, pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Nose

Make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 8 sc into circle, pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Mouth Piece

6 ch.

Work 3 dc in 3^rd ch from hook, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts and 3 dc in last st, 2 ch, sl st in last st.  Fasten off.

Top Hat

7 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 3 ch, work 1 dc in each ch to end.  Turn.

Rows 2-3:  3 ch, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 4:  3 ch, 2 dc and 1 hdc in 1^st st, 1 hdc in each st to last st, 1 hdc and 3 dc in last st.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, 1 sc in each st around.  Join with a sl st in 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Flower for Hat

Make a magic loop.

1 ch, into circle work (1 sc, 1 dc) 5 times, pull circle tight and sl st in 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Trim for Hat

Join yarn to wrong side of hat as shown.

Work enough chain to go across hat.  Sl st into side of hat.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Embroider a black or white dot on each eye or attach a bead.

Attach nose to head.

I added a row of sl st around the mouth piece to make it stand out more because there wasn’t enough contrast between the skin colour and mouth colour.

Embroider a mouth on to the mouth piece.

Stitch the mouth to the head below the nose.

Attach the eyes.

Sew the flower to the hat with a bead.

Stitch the hat to the head.

Embroider on eyebrows if desired.
