Welcome to my crochet chipmunk pattern. This is another request that I received. This is what the finished chipmunk applique will look like.

Crochet Chipmunk Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush 2 ply crochet cotton colours (162) Black Coffee, (254) Moon Rock, (179) Topaz, (383) Ginger Gold, (106) Snow White and (110) Black.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the chipmunk together.
Size
Large chipmunk (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
17cm x 20.5cm or 6.75” x 8”
Medium chipmunk (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
10.5cm x 14cm or 4.25” x 5.5”
Small chipmunk (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
9cm x 11.5cm or 3.5” x 4.5”
Head
Using (254) Moon Rock work 8 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 st, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. 3 ch. (8 sts + 3 ch)
Row 2: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.
Join in (162) Black Coffee and work 4 ch. (12 sts + 4 ch)
Row 3: Work 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Fasten off. (17 sts)
Using (179) Topaz work 2 ch.
Row 4: Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, join to main piece where shown and work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. (19 sts)
Join in (254) Moon Rock.
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Fasten off. (19 sts)
Join (179) Topaz to 2nd last st worked of row 5 as shown.
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, join in (162) Black Coffee work 1 dc in each of next 7 sts, join in (383) Ginger Gold work 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, join in (254) Moon Rock and work 1 dc in each of last 4 sts. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 4 sts, change to (383) Ginger Gold and work 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, change to (162) Black Coffee and work 1 dc in each of following 6 sts, change to (179) Topaz and work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts and a joined dc over the 2 remaining sts. Turn. (17 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, change to (162) Black Coffee and work 1 dc in each of following 6 sts, change to (383) Ginger Gold and work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, change to (254) Moon Rock and work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (15 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, change to (383) Ginger Gold and work 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, change to (162) Black Coffee and work 1 dc in each of following 3 sts, change to (179) Topaz and work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts and a joined dc over last 3 sts. Turn. (13 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, change to (383) Ginger Gold and work 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, change to (254) Moon Rock and work 1 htr in each of next 3 sts and a joined htr over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, change to (383) Ginger Gold and work 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, change to (179) Topaz and work a joined dc over remaining sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join (162) Black Coffee to 1st st of row 11 as shown.
Work 1 or 2 dc in each st around to top of nose, 1 sl st in each st around nose and down to 12 sts before start of neatening row, 3 ch, 1 tr in same st as ch, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 1 sl st in next st. Fasten off.
Arm
Join (179) Topaz to 1st st as shown.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 5 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 1 tr in each of following 2 sts, change to (254) Moon Rock and work 1 tr in each of last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch, work 1 tr in each of 1st 2 sts, change to (179) Topaz and work 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st. 8 ch. (12 sts + 8 ch)
Row 3: Miss 1 ch and work 1 dc in each remaining ch and 1st st on main piece, 1 htr in each of next 5 sts, 1 tr in each of following 3 sts, change to (254) Moon Rock and work 1 tr in next st and a joined tr over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 4: 3 ch, work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, change to (179) Topaz and work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 tr in each of following 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off Topaz.
Using the (254) Moon Rock from row 4 work a joined tr over next 2 sts, 2 dtr in next st, 1 dtr in following st, (2 tr in next st, 1 tr in following st) 2 times, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in following st, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
Join (254) Moon Rock to last (162) Black Coffee st as shown.
Work a joined sl st over next 2 sts, 1 sl st in each st around arm, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, (2 ch, 1 dc in next st) repeat to next (162) Black Coffee st. Fasten off.
Eye
Using (110) Black make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 8 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st.
Join in (106) Snow White.
1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Back Ear
Using (254) Moon Rock make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc, 1 htr and 1 dc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn.
Row 2-3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join (179) Topaz to any st and work 1 sl st in each st. Fasten off.
Front Ear
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 1 dc, 1 htr and 1 dc in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn.
Row 2-4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Row 5: 1 ch work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc over same st as last part of joined dc and last st. 3 ch.
Row 6: Miss 1 ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in 1st st of row 5, 4 ch, miss 1 ch and work 1 dc in each remaining ch, sl st in last st of row 5. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join (106) Snow White to end of point where shown.
Work 1 sl st in each st down to next point and down other side of point, join in (179) Topaz and work 1 sl st in each st to where the ear was fastened off. Fasten off.
Body
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop.
Row 1: 1 ch, work 6 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (6 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in each st. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (12 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, (work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts and 2 dc in following st) repeat to end of row. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (16 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, (work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts and 2 dc in following st) repeat to end of row. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (21 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, (work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts and 2 dc in following st) repeat to end of row. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. (28 sts)
Row 6: 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, (2 htr in following st, 1 htr in next st) 6 times, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, sl st in following st. Turn.
Row 7: Sl st in last dc from row 6, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, (2 htr in next st, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts) 3 times, 2 tr in next st, 1 dtr in each of following 3 sts, a joined dtr over last 2 sts. Don’t fasten off.
Join (179) Topaz 7 sts on from beginning of row as shown.
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in next st, 2 htr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 2 htr in following st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 sl st in each of following 3 sts. Fasten off.
Join (254) Moon Rock 4 sts along row 8.
Row 9: Work 1 sl st in each of next 14 sts. Fasten off.
Join (383) Ginger Gold to st before the 1st Topaz st as shown.
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in following st, 2 tr in next st, 2 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 1 tr in each of following 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each remaining st of the Moon Rock. Fasten off.
Join (254) Moon Rock to st before the start of row 10 as shown.
Row 11: Work 1 dc in each st to 2nd last st of row 10. Fasten off.
Join (110) Black to st before the start of row 11 as shown.
Row 12: Work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, (1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 2 htr in next st) 5 times, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
Use the (162) Black Coffee from row 7.
Row 13: 3 ch, work 1 tr in 1st st and 1 htr in each remaining st, sl st in 2nd st of row 12, 2 ch, miss next st on row 12 and sl st in following st. Turn.
Row 14: Work 2 htr in 1st st and a joined tr over last 2 sts. Don’t fasten off.
Join (106) Snow White to 1st st of row 14 as shown.
Row 15: Work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts of row 12, (1 htr in next st and 2 htr in following st) 8 times, sl st in each of next 2 sts. Fasten off.
Use the (162) Black Coffee.
Row 16: 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of the 2 sts, sl st in 2nd st of row 15, sl st in next st. Turn.
Row 17: Work 1 dc in each st. Don’t fasten off.
Join (110) Black to last st before the white as shown.
Row 18: Work 1 dc in each st to second last st of white, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
Use the (162) Black Coffee.
Row 19: Work 1 dc in each of 1st 4 sts of row 18, (1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 2 htr in following st) 2 times, 1 tr in each of next 7 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
Join (179) Topaz 10 sts along row 19 as shown.
Row 20: 1 sl st in next st, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 2 htr in following st, (1 tr in next st, 2 tr in following st) to 2nd last st, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
Join (110) Black to top of initial circle as shown.
Row 21: Work 1 sl st in each st to end of row 20. Fasten off.
Join (106) Snow White halfway between the start and finish of row 20.
Row 22: Working into row 20 work 1 dc in each remaining st. Fasten off.
Tail
Join (162) Black Coffee 5 sts before the 1st st of neatening row.
Row 1: 1 ch, 2 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts. Turn.
Row 2: 1 ch, 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn.
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn.
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 htr in each of last 3 sts. Turn.
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn.
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 htr in each remaining st. Turn.
Row 8: 2 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 2 tr in following st, 1 tr in each st to end. Don’t fasten off.
Side of Tail
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of 1st 2 sts down the side, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts. Turn
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Join in (383) Ginger Gold.
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Row 5: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts and a joined dc over last 2 sts. Fasten off.
Neatening Row
Join (383) Ginger Gold to 1st Ginger Gold st where shown.
Work 1 ch and 1 dc in same st as ch, (2 ch, 1 dc in next st) in each st around the Ginger Gold, join in (162) Black Coffee and continue working (2 ch and 1 dc in next st) to st before back neatening. Fasten off.
Tummy Neatening
Join (179) Topaz where shown.
Work 1 ch and 1 dc in same st as ch, (2 ch, 1 dc in next st) repeat to 3 sts before tail. Fasten off.
Back Leg
Using (179) Topaz work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch, work 1 dc in each remaining st. Turn.
Rows 2-11: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Row 12: 6 ch, sl st in 1st st, 6 ch, sl st in same st, sl st in next st, 6 ch, sl st in same st, 6 ch, sl st in same st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around to bottom of toes. Fasten off.
Far Back Leg
Using (383) Ginger Gold work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch, work 1 dc in each remaining st. Turn.
Rows 2-9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn.
Row 10: 6 ch, sl st in 1st st, 6 ch, sl st in same st, sl st in next st, 6 ch, sl st in same st, 6 ch, sl st in same st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around to bottom of toes. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Work a row of stitches around the black of the eye with Moon Rock if desired.
Embroider a white dot in middle of eye if desired.
Stitch the eye to the head where shown with some dark brown showing underneath.
Attach the front ear to the head with the end up against the eye.
Embroider on dark markings on each side of the white of the eye if desired.
Sew the back ear in behind the head.
Embroider on finger markings if desired. Attach the head to the body.
Stitch the legs to the body.
Embroider fur markings to the lower body and tail if desired.
And there’s the finished chipmunk applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
