Welcome to my crochet chihuahua. This is another request that I received. This is what the finished chihuahua applique will look like.

Crochet Chihuahua Pattern

Abbreviations 

• st – stitch
• sts – stitches
• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• sc – single crochet
• hdc – half double crochet
• dc – double crochet
• tr – treble crochet

Materials Used

• I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (404) English Tea, (130) Old Lace, (254) Moon Rock and (110) Black.
• A Crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
• Sewing thread and needle to stitch the chihuahua together.
• A darning needle to weave in ends.
• 2 small seed beads if desired for the eyes.

Dark Chihuahua

I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (162) Black Coffee, (404) English Tea, (254) Moon Rock and (110) Black.

Light Chihuahua

I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat colours (404) English Tea, (130) Old Lace, (106) Snow White and (110) Black.

Size

Large chihuahua (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)

14cm x 20.5cm or 5.5” x 8”

Medium chihuahua (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

9cm x 13cm or 3.5” x 5”

Small chihuahua (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

6.5cm x 10cm or 2.5” x 4”

Bottom of Head

Using (404) English Tea make a magic loop.

 

Row 1:  1 ch, work 2 sc in circle.  Pull circle tight.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 3 sc in each st.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 3:  2 ch, work 3 hdc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 hdc in last st.  Turn (10 sts)

Row 4:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn. (12 sts)

Row 6:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 or 2 sc in each st around.  Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Top of Head

Using (254) Moon Rock make a magic loop.

 

Row 1:  1 ch, work 2 sc in circle.  Pull circle tight.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 3 sc in each st.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 3:  2 ch, work 3 hdc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 3 hdc in last st.  Turn (10 sts)

Row 4:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn. (12 sts)

Row 6:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 hdc in last st.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn. (14 sts)

1st Side

Row 10:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1^st 4 sts, a joined sc over next 2 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 11:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 12:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts and a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 13: 1 ch, work a joined sc over both sts.  Fasten off.

2nd Side

Join (254) Moon Rock to 6^th last st on top of head.

Row 1:  1 ch, work a joined sc over same st as ch and next st, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts and a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work a joined sc over both sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 or 2 sc in each st around.  Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

1st Ear

Join (254) Moon Rock to top of head 5 sts on from centre st.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 2 tr in next st.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn. (7 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts and a joined sc over same st as last part of joined sc and last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work a joined sc over both sts.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join (254) Moon Rock to head at bottom of ear.

Work 1 sl st in each st around ear, sl st into head and fasten off.

2nd Ear

Join (254) Moon Rock 10 sts before centre st of head.

Row 1:  4 ch, work 2 tr in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in next st.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts and a joined sc over same st as last part of joined sc and last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work a joined sc over both sts.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join (254) Moon Rock to head at bottom of ear.

Work 1 sl st in each st around ear, sl st into head and fasten off.

Eyes (Make 2)

Using (110) Black make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 10 sc in circle.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Eyebrows (Make 2)

Using (404) English Tea work 4 ch.

Work 1 sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 sc, 1 hdc and 1 sc in next st and 1 sl st in last st.  Fasten off.

Muzzle (Make 2 parts)

Using (130) Old Lace make a magic loop.

2 ch, work 14 dc in circle.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Nose

Using (110) Black make a magic loop.

2 ch, into circle work 4 dc, 2 ch, sl st in circle.  Pull circle tight and fasten off.

1st Inner Ear

Using (404) English Tea make a magic loop.

 

Row 1:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in circle, pull circle tight.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 2:  2 ch, work 1 hdc in each st and 1 hdc in top of ch.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 3:  5 ch, work 1 sc in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 ch, sl st in same st as sc, sl st in next st, 2 ch, a joined hdc over next 2 ch, 2 ch, sl st in 1^st st of row 2, sl st in each st to end of row 2, 4 ch, miss 1^st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, work 1 sl st in each st around the edge of rows 1 and 2.  Fasten off.

2nd Inner Ear

Using (404) English Tea make a magic loop.

 

Row 1:  2 ch, work 2 hdc in circle, pull circle tight.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 2:  2 ch, work 1 hdc in each st and 1 hdc in top of ch.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 3:  5 ch, miss 1^st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, 1 sl st in each st around the outside of rows 1 and 2, 4 ch, miss 1^st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, 1 sl st in each st along row 2, 2 ch, work a joined hdc in back loop of 1^st 2 ch, 2 ch, sl st in same st as last part of joined hdc, sl st in next st, 1 ch, 1 sc in same st as ch, sl st in end of chains.  Fasten off.

Body

Using (254) Moon Rock work 9 ch.

 

Row 1:  Miss 1^st ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 11:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 12:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 13:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (16 sts)

Row 14:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 15:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 16:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 17:   1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 18:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 19:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

1 ch, work 1 or 2 sc in each st around.  Sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Blaze

Using (404) English Tea make a magic loop.

 

Row 1:  3 ch, work 2 dc in circle, pull circle tight.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 sc in each st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Rows 3-9:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1^st st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 11:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 12:  3 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in each of following 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in last st.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sl st in each st down the side, around the bottom and up the other side to the beginning of row 12.  Fasten off.

Legs (Make 2)

Using (130) Old Lace make a magic loop.

 

Row 1:  3 ch, work 1 dc in circle, pull circle tight.  Turn.

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 sc in st and 1 sc in top of ch.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  3 ch.  Turn.  (4 sts + 3 ch)

Row 5:  Miss 1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 ch, sl st in same st as last part of joined sc, sl st in next st, 1 ch, 1 sc in same st as ch, 1 sc in each remaining st.  Turn.

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1^st 5 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Turn one leg before working the neatening row so they face in opposite directions.

Work 1 sl st in each st around.  Fasten off.

Tip of Tail

Using (404) English Tea work 5 ch.

Work 1 sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next st, 2 hdc in following st, 1 dc in last st.  Fasten off.

Bottom of Tail

Using (254) Moon Rock work 10 ch.

Work 1 dc in 4^th ch from hook, (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in following st) repeat over remaining ch.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Stitch the top of the head to the bottom of the head.

Attach a bead to each eye if desired.

Sew the eyes to the head.

Stitch the eyebrows to the head.

Attach the inner ears to the ears.

Sew the 2 muzzle pieces together with about 3 stitches.

Stitch the muzzle to the bottom of the head.

Embroider on a mouth.

Attach the nose over the middle of the muzzle.

Embroider paw markings on the paws.

Sew the blaze to the body.

Stitch a leg to each side of the blaze.

Attach the head to the body.

Stitch the end of the tail to the bottom of the tail.

Sew the tail in behind the body.

And there’s the finished chihuahua applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colors.
