Crochet Blue Wren Pattern

Welcome to my crochet blue wren pattern. This is a request that I received.

Crochet Blue Wren Pattern

Abbreviations 

Materials Used

Size

Large blue wren (Using 8 ply crochet cotton & a 3mm hook)

13cm x 13cm or 5” x 5”

Medium blue wren (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)

9.5cm x 8cm or 3.75” x 3.25”

Small blue wren (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)

6cm x 7cm or 2.5” x 2.75”

Head

Using (215) Royal Blue work 6 ch.

 

Row 1:  Miss 1st ch and work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Change to (110) Black. (I left the blue attached to use on the neatening row).

Row 3:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 11:  3 ch, work a 3 dc cluster over same st as ch and next 2 sts, 3 ch, sl st in same st as last part of cluster and next st, 3 ch, a joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Fasten off.

Change to (106) White

Row 12:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each of 1st 8 dc, work 3 dc in sl st.  Turn.  (11 sts)

Row 13:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 14:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 15:  1 ch, work 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 16:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to end.  Turn.  (10 sts)

Row 17:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 18:  1 ch, work a joined sc over 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st.  Turn.  (9 sts)

Row 19:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined sc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 20:  1 ch, work 2 joined scs over the 1st 4 sts, 1 sc in each st to end.

 

Work 1 sl st in each st up the side.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row and Beak

Join black cotton to black part of back where shown.

Work 1 sl st in each st to blue part of head, join in blue and work 1 sc in each st around the blue section.

Join in black and work 4 ch, work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next st and 1 hdc in last ch, sl st in bird, continue working a sl st in each st of black.  Join white and work a sl st in each st down the side.  Fasten off.

 

Eye Marking

Using (215) Royal Blue make a magic loop.

 

3 ch, miss 1st ch and sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in circle, 4 ch, miss 1st ch and sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in circle, 5 ch, miss 1st ch and work a sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in circle, 3 ch, miss 1st ch and sl st in each remaining ch, work 2 sl sts in circle, 3 ch, miss 1st ch and sl st in each remaining ch, work 2 sl sts in circle.  Pull circle tight and fasten off.

Neck Marking

Using (215) Royal Blue work 9 ch.

Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts, 1 sc in following st, a joined sc over next 2 sts, 1 ch, a sl st in same st as last part of joined sc, sl st in next st, 1 ch, a joined sc over next 2 sts, 1 ch, sl st in last st.  Fasten off.

Top Wing Part

Using (074) Mercury work 10 ch.

 

Miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 5 sts, 6 ch, miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, (sl st in next of original ch, 6 ch, miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each remaining ch) repeat to last ch, sl st in last ch.  Fasten off leaving a long tail to weave the bottom half of the wing section together.

Bottom Wing Part

Using (074) Mercury work 17 ch.

 

Miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each of next 12 sts, 11 ch, miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in next of original ch, 9 ch, miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in next of original ch, 7 ch, miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in next of original ch, 5 ch, miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in last of original ch.  Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Tail

Using (215) Royal Blue make a magic loop.

 

Work 17 ch, miss 2 ch and work 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in each of following 4 sts, 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in circle, 19 ch, miss 2 ch and work 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in each of following 4 sts, 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in circle,  17 ch, miss 2 ch and work 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in each of following 4 sts, 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in circle.  Pull circle tight and fasten off leaving a long tail.

Tail Fluff

Using (110) Black make a magic loop.

 

Into circle work (4 ch, miss 1st st, 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in circle, 5 ch, miss 1st ch, 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in circle) 2 times, 4 ch, miss 1st st, 1 sl st in each st to end, sl st in circle.  Pull circle tight and fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Stitch the eye marking to the head.

Sew the neck marking to the head.

Attach a bead for the eye or embroider on an eye.

Weave together the top wing sections to about halfway.

Weave together the bottom wing sections to about halfway.

Stitch the bottom wing part behind the top wing part as shown.

Sew the wing to the bird where shown.

Weave together the 3 pieces of the tail up to about halfway.

Stitch the tail fluff to the bottom of the tail.

Attach the tail behind the wing where shown.

Back Leg

Join (074) Mercury to body 3 sts before wing.

3 ch, work a 3 dc cluster over same st as ch and next st.  11 ch, miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts, 3 ch, miss 1st ch and sl st in each of next 2 sts, sl st in top of last claw, 3 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts and sl st in top of previous claws.  Fasten off.

Front Leg

Join (074) Mercury to body where shown.

10 ch.

Miss 1st ch and work 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts, 3 ch, miss 1st ch and sl st in each of next 2 sts, sl st in top of last claw, 3 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts and sl st in top of previous claws.  Fasten off.
