Welcome to my crochet ballerina pattern. This is another request that I received. This is what the finished ballerina applique will look like.

Crochet Ballerina Pattern
Abbreviations
- st – stitch
- sts – stitches
- ch – chain
- sl st – slip stitch
- dc – double crochet
- htr – half treble crochet
- tr – treble crochet
- dtr – double treble crochet
Materials Used
- Crochet cotton or wool, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush or Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton colours (105) Bridal White, (222) Tulip, (162) Black Coffee, (786) Fuchsia and a tiny bit of (110) Black and (215) Royal Blue.
- A crochet hook, I used a 1mm hook.
- Scissors.
- Darning needle to weave in ends.
- Sewing thread and needle to stitch the ballerina together.
Size
Large ballerina (Using 8 ply yarn & a 3mm hook)
14cm x 24cm or 5.5” x 9.5”
Medium ballerina (Using 4 ply crochet cotton & a 1.5mm hook)
9cm x 15cm or 3.5” x 6”
Small ballerina (Using 2 ply crochet cotton & a 1mm hook)
7.5cm x 11.5cm or 3” x 4.5”
Head
Using (105) Bridal White work 8 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in following st, 1 tr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 5: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (11 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (7 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined dc over all 3 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to st before middle st of row 1, 2 htr in next st, 1 dc in each st to end. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Left Side of Hair
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 2 ch, work 2 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in last st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
Work 1 sl st in each st to point of row 1, 10 ch, miss 1 ch, sl st in each of next 2 sts, a joined sl st over following 2 sts, 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in following st, 1 sl st in each remaining ch and each st to end of row. Fasten off.
Right Side of Hair
Using (162) Black Coffee work 7 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. 6 ch.
Row 2: Miss 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.
Work along the top of the 1st 2 rows
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of the 2 sts. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 11: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined htr over last 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st to top of the 2 strands of hair, work a sl st behind the piece to other side, 10 ch, miss 1 ch, sl st in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in following st, 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts, a joined sl st over following 2 sts, 1 sl st in each remaining ch and each st to end of row. Fasten off.
Ponytail
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop.
Row 1: 2 ch, work 1 htr in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc and 1 htr in st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 2 htr in last st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 9: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 10: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (4 sts)

Row 14: 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 15: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 htr in next st, 1 tr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 16: 2 ch, work 1 htr in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 17: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 3 sts, 1 htr in each of last 3 sts. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 18: 1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 19: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 3 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Side Hair
Using (162) Black Coffee make a magic loop.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 1 tr in circle. Pull circle tight. Turn. (1 st)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 2 dc in st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc 1st st and 1 htr in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 4: 2 ch, work 1 htr in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in last st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (3 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Don’t fasten off.
Neatening Row
Turn work before neatening row.
Work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Eyes (Make 2)
Using (110) Black make a magic loop.
1 ch, work 3 dc in circle. Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st. Fasten off.
Join (215) Royal Blue to any stitch.
Work 1 sl st in each st around. Fasten off.
Bow
Using (786) Fuchsia make a magic loop.
4 ch, work 3 dtr in circle, 4 ch, sl st in circle, 4 ch, 3 dtr in circle, 4 ch, sl st in circle. Pull circle tight. 8 ch. Fasten off.
Dress Bodice
Using (786) Fuchsia work 6 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1st ch and work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 2: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 3: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (5 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, a joined dc over next 2 sts. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row & Straps
5 ch, miss 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl st to last st of top, 3 ch, miss 1st ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch and around sides and bottom to 1st st of top, 5 ch, miss 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each of next 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, 1 htr in last ch, sl st in each st to beginning of row. Fasten off.
Dress Skirt
Join (222) Tulip to 1st st at bottom of bodice where shown.
Row 1: 3 ch, work 2 tr in each st. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 2: 3 ch, work 2 tr in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 tr in each st to last 2 sts, 2 tr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (14 sts)
Row 3: 3 ch, work 2 tr in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 tr in each st to last 2 sts, 2 tr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (18 sts)
Row 4: 3 ch, work 2 tr in each of 1st 2 sts, 1 tr in each st to last 2 sts, 2 tr in each of last 2 sts. Turn. (22 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, (2 ch, 1 dc in next st) repeat to end of row. Fasten off.
Skirt Top
Using (786) Fuchsia work 21 ch.
Miss 3 ch, work 1 tr in each of next 4 sts, 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, sl st in next ch, (15 ch miss 3 ch, work 1 tr in each of next 4 sts, 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, sl st in next of original ch) repeat until you have 6 sections. Fasten off.
Sash
Using (222) Tulip work 12 ch.
Miss 1 ch and work 1 dc in each st to end. Fasten off.
Body
Using (105) Bridal White work 3 ch.
Row 1: Miss 1 ch, work 1 dc in each remaining ch. Turn. (2 sts)
Rows 2-4: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 5: 1 ch, work 2 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 6: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 7: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Turn. (4 sts)
Row 8: 1 ch, work 1 dc in each st. Fasten off.
Right Arm
Join (105) Bridal White to top of 5th row where shown.
Work 13 ch.
Miss 1st ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 1 tr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dtr in each remaining st. Sl st into body. Fasten off.
Left Arm
Join (105) Bridal White to bottom of 5th row where shown.
Work 15 ch.
Miss 2 ch, work 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, a joined dc over following 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, a joined tr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in next st, a joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 dtr in last st. Sl st in the side of the body. Don’t turn or fasten off.
Neatening Row
Work 1 sl st in each st to end of right arm, 3 ch, miss 1st ch and sl st in each of next 2 ch, sl st in next st, 2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each st to end of left hand, 3 ch, miss 1 ch, work 1 sl st in each remaining ch, sl in next st, 2 ch, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each st to end of row. Fasten off.
Legs (Make 2)
Using (105) Bridal White work 15 ch.
Work 1 sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in following st, 1 sl st in next st, 1 dc in following st, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each st to end. Fasten off.
Front Ballet Slipper
Using (786) Fuchsia work 6 ch.
Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 2 ch, sl st in same st as htr, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 tr in last st. Work about 12 ch to wrap around the leg. Fasten off.
Back Ballet Slipper
Using (786) Fuchsia work 6 ch.
Work 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 1 dc in each st to end. Work 13 ch to wrap around the leg. Fasten off.
To Make Up
Weave in ends. Stitch the left side of hair to the head where shown.
Sew the right side of the hair to head where shown.
Embroider a white dot to the black of each eye.
Attach the eyes to the head where shown. Embroider on eyelashes if desired.
Embroider a mouth and nose to the head.
Wrap the chain around the centre of the bow and fasten it at the back.
Sew the bow in behind the hair where shown.
Stitch the ponytail in behind the bow and hair where shown.
Stitch the side hair just below the right side hair.
Sew the skirt top to the dress skirt where shown.
Attach the sash to the waist of the dress.
Stitch the dress to the body where shown.
Sew the head to the neck.
Attach the ballet slippers to the feet.
Join the legs together at the top where shown.
Stitch the legs in behind the dress.
And there’s the finished ballerina applique. I’ve also made it in different sizes and colours.
