Today I’ll be showing you how to make this butterfly crochet pattern.

Butterfly Crochet Pattern

Abbreviations 

• st – stitch
• sts – stitches
• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• dc – double crochet
• htr – half treble crochet
• tr – treble crochet
• dtr – double treble crochet
• ttr – triple treble crochet

Materials Used

• Crochet cotton or wool, I used 7 colours of 4 ply crochet cotton.
• A crochet hook, I used a 1.25mm hook.
• Scissors.
• Darning needle to weave in ends.
• Sewing needle and black cotton to sew upper body onto body.

Body

15 ch.

Miss 1^st ch, work 1 dc into each ch to end then work 1 dc into the back of each ch.  Fasten off.

Wing

Join cotton to top of body as shown.

 

25 ch.

Work 1 dtr in 5^th ch from hook, 2 ttr in each of next 2 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 5 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 5 sts from end of 1^st wing segment as shown.

 

4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in each of last 4 sts.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 5 sts from end of 2^nd wing segment.

 4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in next st and 2 dc in last st.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 4 sts from end of 3^rd wing segment.

4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 1 joined dtr over next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 4 sts from end of 4^th wing segment.

4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 5 sts from end of 5^th wing segment.

4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 4 sts from end of 6^th wing segment.

4 ch, work 3 dtr in same place as ch, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of following 2 sts, 1 htr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of last 2 sts.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 2 sts from end of 7^th wing segment.

5 ch, work 3 dtr in 5^th ch from hook, 1 dtr in st where you started the ch and next st, 2 dtr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st from end of 8^th wing segment.

6 ch, miss 4 ch and work 2 dtr in each of next 2 ch, 1 dtr in st where you started the ch and next st, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 2 tr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in following st, 2 dc in last st.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 2 sts from end of 9^th wing segment.

6 ch, miss 4 ch and work 2 dtr in each of next 2 ch, 1 dtr in st where you started the ch and next st, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 2 tr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 4 sts, 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, 1 dc in each of last 3 sts.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 3 sts from end of 10^th wing segment.

6 ch, miss 4 ch and work 2 dtr in each of next 2 ch, 1 dtr in st where you started the ch and next 2 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 2 tr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, 2 htr in following st, 1 htr in each of next 4 sts, 1 dc in each of last 6 sts.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 4 sts from end of 11^th wing segment.

8 ch, miss 4 ch and work 1 dtr in each of next 4 ch, 2 joined dtr over following 4 sts, 1 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 2 tr in following st, 1 tr in each of next 4 sts, 2 tr in following st, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Sl st into next st on body.  Fasten off.

2nd Side of Wing

21 ch.

Join to body across from 1^st segment of 1^st wing as shown.

 

Sl st into next st down body, 1 dc in each of 1^st 3 ch, 1 htr in each of next 5 sts, 1 tr in each of following 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over next 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of following 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over next 2 sts, 2 ttr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dtr in last st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 1^st wing segment.

1 dc in each of next 4 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 3 dtr in following st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 2^nd wing segment.

2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 3 dtr in following st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 3^rd wing segment.

2 dc in 1^st st, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 3 dtr in following st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 4^th wing segment.

1 dc in 1^st st, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 joined dtr over following 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 3 dtr in following st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 5^th wing segment.

2 dc in 1st st, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 5 sts, 3 dtr in following st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 6^th wing segment.

1 dc in each of 1^st 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of following 2 sts, 3 dtr in following st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 7^th wing segment.

1 dc in 1^st st, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 3 dtr in following st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

With the colour for the 9^th wing segment join cotton 1 st from end of 8^th wing segment as shown.

 

Work 2 ch. Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 8^th wing segment.

2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 2 tr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts, 2 dtr in each of the ch, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

With the colour for the 10^th wing segment join cotton 2 sts from end of 9^th wing segment.

Work 2 ch.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 9^th wing segment.

 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, 1 tr in each of next 4 sts, 2 tr in each of following 2 sts, 1 dtr in each of next 4 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in next st and st where you started the ch, 2 dtr in each of the ch, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

With the colour for the 11^th wing segment join cotton 3 sts from end of 10^th wing segment.

Work 2 ch.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 10^th wing segment.

1 dc in each of next 6 sts, 1 htr in each of following 4 sts, 2 htr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 5 sts, 2 tr in next st, 1 dtr in each of following 4 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 2 sts and where you started the ch, 2 dtr in each of the ch, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

With the colour for the 12^th wing segment join cotton 4 sts from end of 11^th wing segment.

Work 4 ch.  Fasten off.

Join next colour 1 st down the body from 11^th wing segment.

1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 1 htr in each of following 3 sts, 2 tr in next st, 1 tr in each of following 4 sts, 2 tr in next st, 1 dtr in each of following 4 sts, 2 dtr in following st, 1 dtr in each of next 3 sts, 2 joined dtr over next 4 sts, 1 dtr in each remaining st, 4 ch, sl st in same st as last dtr.  Fasten off.

Upper Body

Make a magic loop.

 

Row 1:  3 ch, work 1 tr into circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn.

Row 2:  3 ch, work 1 tr in st and 1 tr in top of ch.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 3:  3 ch, work 1 tr into each st to end.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 4:  3 ch, work 1 tr into each st and in top of ch.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 5:  3 ch, work 1 tr into each st to end.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 6:  3 ch, work 1 tr into each st and in top of ch.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 7:  3 ch, work 1 tr into each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 8:  4 ch, work a dtr cluster over all sts. 12 ch, work 1 dc in 3^rd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each ch to head, sl st into head, 12 ch, work 1 dc in 3^rd ch from hook, 1 sl st in each ch to head, sl st into head.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Stitch the upper body over the top of the body.
