Welcome to my baby teddy bear crochet applique pattern. I’ve been wanting to make a teddy bears picnic blanket for a while and this is one of the appliques that I’m going to use on it. The finished baby teddy bear will look like this.

Baby Teddy Bear Crochet Applique Pattern

Abbreviations 

• st – stitch
• sts – stitches
• ch – chain
• sl st – slip stitch
• dc – double crochet
• htr – half treble crochet
• tr – treble crochet
• dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

• 5 colours of cotton or wool, I used 4 ply crochet cotton.
• A crochet hook, I used a 1.25mm hook.
• Scissors.
• Darning needle to weave in ends.
• Sewing thread and needle to stitch the bear together.
• Silver or grey thread to embroider a nappy pin on the nappy.
• Black thread to embroider on the nose, mouth and eyes.

Size

Large (Using 8 ply wool)

10cm x 7cm or 4” x 2.75”

Medium (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)

7cm x 4.5cm or 2.75” x 1.75”

Head

Using main colour make a magic loop.

Row 1:  2 ch, into circle work 3 tr, 2 htr, 3 tr and 2 htr.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.

Row 2:  2 ch, work 2 tr in each st.  Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around.  Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Ears

Join main colour cotton 5 sts before centre st.

1 ch, work 1 htr and 1 tr in same st as ch, 2 tr in next st, 1 tr, 1 htr and 1 sl st in following st, 1 sl st in each of next 3 sts, 2 ch, sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, sl st in same st as ch, 3 ch, miss 1^st ch, sl st in remaining 2 ch, sl st in same st as ch, sl st in each of next 3 sts, 1 ch, 1 htr and 1 tr in same st as ch, 2 tr in next st, 1 tr, 1 htr and 1 sl st in following st.  Fasten off.

Muzzle

Using main colour make a magic loop.

2 ch, work 3 tr, 2 htr, 3 tr and 2 htr in circle.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Inner Ear (Make 2)

Using contrast colour make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 3 dc in circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Fasten off.

Arm

Using main colour make a magic loop.

Row 1:  3 ch, work 3 tr in circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn.

Row 2:  3 ch, work 1 tr in each st to last st, work 2 tr in last st.  Turn.

Row 3:  3 ch, work 1 tr in each of 1^st 2 sts, a joined htr over last 2 sts.  Turn.

Row 4:  3 ch, work a tr cluster over all sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sl st in each st around.  Fasten off.

Body

Using main colour join cotton 2 sts before centre st at bottom of head.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 11:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of 1^st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Leg

Join main colour cotton to wrong side at bottom front of body.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 5 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (5 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (7 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (6 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1^st 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join main colour cotton at neck as shown.

Work a sl st in each st around the body and leg to neck.  Fasten off.

Bottom of Foot

Using contrast work 4 ch.

1 sl st in 2^nd ch from hook, 1 dc, 1 htr and 1 dc in next st, 1 sl st in last st.  Fasten off.

Nappy

Using white work 4 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1^st ch and work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 5:  2 ch, work 1 htr in each of 1^st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.    Turn.  (4 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 tr in last st.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Turn work over before starting neatening row.

1 ch, work 1 dc in each st around.  Join with a sl st in top of 1^st st.  Fasten off.

Bottle

Using white work 4 ch.

Row 1:  Miss 1^st ch and work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Rows 2-5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 6:  2 ch, work 1 htr in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st, 1 htr in last st.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work 1 sl st in each st around sides and bottom, into top work 2 ch, 1 htr in 1^st st, 1 dc in next st and 1 htr in last st.  Fasten off.

Bottle Top

Join contrast colour to 1^st st at top.

1 ch, work 1 dc in each of the 3 sts.  Fasten off.

Teat

Join teat colour in 1^st st of bottle top on wrong side.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of the 3 sts.  Turn.

Row 2:  sl st to middle st, 2 ch, work 1 htr in same st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Embroider a nose and mouth on the muzzle.

Stitch the inner ears to the ears.

Embroider a nappy pin to the nappy.

Sew the muzzle near the bottom of the bear’s head.

Stitch the bottom of the foot to the leg.

Embroider eyes just above the muzzle.

Stitch the nappy on the bear.

Attach the arm to the bear.

Stitch the bottle to the bear behind the arm and leg with the teat near the bear’s face.
