Baby Elephant Crochet Applique Pattern (UK Version)

Baby Elephant Crochet Applique Pattern

Abbreviations 

Materials Used 

Size 

Large elephant (Using 8 ply wool)

15cm x 10cm or 6” x 4”

Medium elephant (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)

10cm x 7cm or 4” x 2.75”

Small elephant (Using 2 ply crochet cotton)

10cm x 6.5cm or 4” x 2.5”

Body

Make a magic loop.

Row 1:  2 ch. Work 15 tr into circle and pull circle tight. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 2:  2 ch. 1 tr in same place as ch. Work 2 tr into each st around. Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 3:  2 ch. Work 1 tr in same place as ch (1 tr in each of next 2 sts and 2 tr in following st) repeat to end, sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 4:  2 ch. Work 1 tr in same place as ch (1 tr in each of next 2 sts and 2 tr in following st) repeat to end, sl st in top of 1st st.  Don’t fasten off.

Tail

7 ch.

Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, 1 htr in next st, 2 dtr in following st, 1 sl st in each remaining ch.  Sl st into body.  Fasten off.

Head

Join cotton 14 sts on from tail.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 2 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc in following st.  Turn.  (12 sts)

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 3:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 4:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (13 sts)

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 6:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 7:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.  (14 sts)

Row 8:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 9:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 10:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 11:  1 ch, work 2 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (3 sts)

Row 12:  3 ch, work a joined tr over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Row 13: 1 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over same st as dc and next st.  Turn.  (2 sts)

Rows 14-17:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each st.  Turn.   (2 sts)

Row 18:  1 ch, work a joined dc over both sts.  Turn.  (1 st)

Row 19:  1 ch, work 1 dc in st.  Turn.  (1 st)

Row 20:  1 ch, work 1 dc in st.  Fasten off.

Top of Head

Join cotton to 2nd st after trunk.

Row 1:  1 dc in next st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.  (8 sts)

Row 2:  2 ch, a joined htr over 1st 2 sts, 2 htr in next st, 1 htr in following st, 1 dc in next st, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join cotton at beginning of top of head as shown.

1 dc in each st around to trunk, sl st in each st to tip of trunk.  Into end st work 2 ch, 1 htr, 2 ch, sl st in same st, 2 ch, 1 htr in same st, 2 ch, sl st in same st, work 1 sl st in each st down to body.  Fasten off.

1st Leg

Join cotton 5 stitches on from bottom of head.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 5 sts.  Turn.

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 5 sts.  Turn.

Row 3:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st and a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Fasten off.

2nd Leg

Join cotton 2 stitches on from 1st leg.

Row 1:  1 ch, work 1 dc in same st as ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 htr in each of following 2 sts, 1 tr in next st.  Turn.

Row 2:  1 ch, work 1 dc in each of next 5 sts.  Turn.

Row 3:  1 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in next st and a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Fasten off.

Neatening Row

Join cotton at bottom of 1st leg as shown.

Work 1 dc in each st around 1st leg, work 1 sl st in each st between legs and then 1 dc in each st around 2nd leg.  Sl st into body and fasten off.

Ear

Make a magic loop.

Row 1:  3 ch, work 5 tr into circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn.

Row 2:  3 ch, work 2 tr in 1st st, 1 tr in each st to last st and 2 tr in last st.  Turn.

Row 3:  3 ch, work 2 tr in 1st st, 1 tr in each st to last st and 2 tr in last st.  Fasten off.

Eye

Make a magic loop.

1 ch, work 5 dc into circle.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in 1st st.  Fasten off.

Flower

Make a magic loop.

1 ch, into circle work (1 dc and 1 tr) 5 times, pull circle tight and sl st in 1st st.  Fasten off.

Leaves

Make a magic loop.

3 ch, work a joined tr into circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Embroider a white dot on the eye.

Stitch the ear to the elephant.

Sew the eye to the elephant’s head embroidering on eyelashes if desired.

Attach the leaves to the flower and stitch a bead in the centre of the flower if desired.

Sew the flower to the front of the elephant’s ear.
